Chapter 3 Pete Ginty pushed his sweat stained hat back on his head. Emily wished Pete would go on about his business and leave her alone. From now on every man she met would say hello there, Emily.

Chapter 4 Emily goes riding in her grandpa’s new automobile. They could not stop! Emily told her she would jump out and open the door, jump out, and open the gate. Emily’s grandpa told her no but Emily said she would be fine.

Chapter 5 The library was actually going to open on Saturday afternoon! People could borrow books and keep them for two weeks. Mama what’s silver tea? Asked Emily thinking that it sounded very special.

Chapter 6 The dove that turned to a handsome young man, the girl who had to bring water from the well in a sieve the old women whose pig would not go over the stile. Mama closed her book. The girls washed their faces for bed.

Chapter 7 Emily loved to watch grandma measure out dress material on the dry goods side of the store. Once Emily ducked under the counter because Fong Quock came into the store and while she sat there among the paper bags, she heard one of the ladies telling someone the secret of the lightest pie crust you ever saw. Emily could not believe her ears because grandma knew that recipe.

Chapter 8 Mama was heartsick just heartsick. When daddy told her how much money they would get this year for the crops. She was heartbroken.

Chapter 9 So the library grew. Mama sent off for black beauty. Emily read it three times.
