5th Grade Feature February 19, 2016 In school, we have been; At home you can; Reading Identifying the main idea and supporting details in a selected text Understanding that facts and information are organized in different structures Next Week Identifying key events that illustrate the significance of a famous person’s life following a chronological text structure Extracting factual information from literary nonfiction Math Exploring division patterns with decimals Learning how to divide decimals by whole numbers Participating in a math workshop Investigating where to place the decimal in the quotient when dividing Learning how to divide a decimal by a decimal Writing Learning about persuasive strategies to use in our writing Brainstorming ideas for our next writing project Social Studies Creating newspaper articles to highlight the different perspectives of the Boston Massacre Reading and Writing: -Have a conversation with your child about a book they have listened to in class or are currently reading. Ask them to tell you what it is mostly about. Have them provide you with evidence or details to support their main idea. -Ask your child to share one persuasive strategy they learned about in class. Ask them to give you an example of this strategy that can be found in the world around them. Math: -Study multiplication and division facts. -Have your child take your last grocery receipt and divide it by 3. (Example: $35.46 ÷ 3) Social Studies: -Engage in a dialogue with your child using this question, “Was the Boston Massacre a murder or act of self-defense?” -Have your child share their newspaper article with you on google docs.
