ADVERBS French One Chapter 5

Adverbs You have already learned some adverbs in French Souvent = often De temps en temps = from time to time Rarement = rarely Régulièrement = regularly Today we will be learning how to form adverbs in French.

ADVERBS In English, many adverbs end in –ly Quickly Slowly To form adverbs in French take the FEMININE FORM of the adjective and add –ment. Sérieux -> sérieuse -> sérieusement Adverbs in French are usually placed directly after the verb. Les élèves travaillent sérieusement.

EXAMPLES Heureux Timide Nous dansons heureusement. créatif Timidement Nous dansons heureusement. We happily dance. créatif créativement

IRREGULAR ADVERBS The adjectives bon (good) and mauvais (bad) have irregular adverbs. Bon -> bien (well) Mauvias -> mal (badly) EXAMPLES Ma cousine joue bien au hockey. My cousin plays hockey well. She skis (does skiing) badly. Elle fait mal du ski.
