Graduation Rates Performance Division New Jersey Department of Education
The 4-Year, Adjusted Cohort Rate Beginning in 2011, New Jersey calculated subgroup, school, district, and state graduation rates using the federally-mandated “adjusted cohort” calculation, based on student-level data submitted by districts over the past four years in NJSMART. The “adjusted cohort” formula divides the number of 4-year graduates (i.e., those students receiving a diploma) by the number of first-time ninth graders who entered the cohort four years earlier. In equation form, the rate calculates: Performance Division New Jersey Department of Education 4-Year Cohort Graduates in Year 2011 [First-Time 9th Graders in Fall 2007] + [Transfers In] – [Verified Transfers Out] – [Excluded From Cohort]
The 5-Year, Adjusted Cohort Rate The “5-year adjusted cohort” formula divides the number of 5-year graduates (i.e., those students receiving a diploma) by the number of first-time ninth graders who entered the cohort five years earlier. In equation form, the rate calculates: Performance Division 5-Year Cohort Graduates in Year 2012 [First-Time 9th Graders in Fall 2007] + [Transfers In] – [Verified Transfers Out] – [Excluded From Cohort] New Jersey Department of Education
