BEAT LIGHTS - By Tom Dixon
Beat emits an atmospheric, ambient quality of light Beat emits an atmospheric, ambient quality of light. Each piece bears the hallmarks of the craftsman who created it. These pendant lights are crafted from solid sheets of brass, available in four different silhouettes, Wide, Fat, Tall and Stout, and in black, white, grey and brushed brass
HISTORY OF BEAT LIGHTS
In 2004 Tom Dixon was involved in an initiative in the city of Jaipur to create alternative possibilities for the rapidly vanishing craftsmen and their skills. Inspired from the traditional Indian brass cooking pots and vessels, the Beat lights were born by the renowned artisan craftsmen of Moradabad in Northern India.
The production of Beat, imitating the basic proportions and techniques of the traditional brass work, but targeting a different functionality, keeps part of the craft alive. The interior of each piece bears the beaten marks of its making, spun brass, braised and beaten by hand. These lights were finally launched in 2005
PROCESS OF BEAT LIGHTS
The manufacturing method is based on traditional methods Though inspired by the past, these lights are decidedly modern in their appeal. The beat lights are crafted from solid sheets of brass which is available in different silhouttes, Wide, tall, fat and Stout.
Once beaten the shades have to be spun again so that any irregularities in the outer surface can be removed leaving a beautiful smooth finish which is left brushed or painted in matt black lacquer. The double conical shade is attached to a black or brass articulated arm with a substantial joint and then to a solid cast iron base with a brass on/off switch. Tom used the method in other fixtures but with a stunning twist in colour or plating. Several neutral colors like grey, white and black were used – for exterior color choices, as well as silver plating or a clear lacquer finish for the interior.
Both the grey and black fixtures have a matte powder-coated finish while the white fixtures have a high gloss lacquer finish. The exterior of each Beat Light design has a smooth, spun brass surface while the hammer marks are left visible in the interior. Each piece is unique and a testament to a time-consuming and centuries old process and it can take up to 4 days to make one light.
