Explanations for forgetting: Interference Objectives: to be able to outline and evaluate interference theory as an explanation for forgetting

Discuss the following… What is interference theory? Outline proactive interference… Outline retroactive interference… Give examples in your discussion…

Interference theory (IT) IT sees forgetting as due to information in LTM becoming confused with or disrupted by other information during coding, leading to inaccurate recall. There are two forms of interference: proactive and retroactive.

2 forms of interference… Proactive: works forward in time, information stored previously interferes with an attempt to recall something new, e.g. the memory of an old phone number disrupts attempts to recall a new phone number. Retroactive: works backwards in time, occurring when coding new information disrupts information stored previously, e.g. the memory of a new car registration number prevents recall of a previous one.

Task: complete the question sheet to apply your knowledge.

Practical Explanations of forgetting You need to plan out the task to create an experiment for explanation of forgetting You will be in groups of 3/4, you need to divide the tasks up, there are four tasks The best experiment will get chance to carry it out on the class You will only have this lesson to plan and deliver it!

Test your understanding… Explain proactive interference as an explanation for forgetting (2 marks) Outline interference as an explanation for forgetting (4 marks)
