CRASH RISK BEGINNER DRIVERS The CRASH RISK for BEGINNER DRIVERS is unacceptably high ...what can we do about it? A beginner driver’s risk of being harmed in a crash is the lowest it will be in their whole driving life Crash rates skyrocket 20 to 30 times as soon as they get their P’s !

Problem Solution Do as I say Find your own way Learn to Able to find your own way Solution

GET QUALITY DRIVING EXPERIENCE ! GO LONG LONG LOTS of driving & repetition. Real hours have a real benefit ! GO WIDE WIDE Go DIFFERENT ... ... places, ways, times, conditions, reasons etc GO DEEP DEEP THINK how you drive, TALK about it. Be your own: supervisor, instructor, assessor.

What would help you most right now? 1. Confidence to be a Supervisor 2. Know how to plan a practice session 3. Know how to fix a special problem 4. Learn about the “P-plate ready” indicator 5. See a driving demonstration* 6. Get feedback on my driving (Supervisor)* 7. Get feedback on my driving (Learner)* 8. See a driving skill being taught* 9. Something else … ? * In-car activity

Confidence to be a Supervisor Discussion [p.3] Confidence to be a Supervisor What are your main concerns as a Supervisor? Would you like to discuss … Quickly, what you need to know? Topics from the Supervisor’s Guide? Topics from “Helpful Hints for Supervisors”?

2. Planning a practice session Discussion [p.7] 2. Planning a practice session Understand what’s to be practiced and how. Decide the purpose – is it for long, wide and/or deep experience? Decide on a challenging but achievable goal. The practice should suit the driving situation & context. Predict and discuss possible problems Use the “Before You Drive” checklist. Review the experience at the end of the drive.

Fixing a special problem Discussion [p.8] Fixing a special problem What problem do you want to fix? Practice fixing problems on your own (self-management skills) Is it one part of a bigger problem? Is the problem hard to fix? … know the correct method (self-assessor). … work out a tactic to get it right (self-instructor). … manage your thoughts and feelings (self-supervisor).

“P-Plate ready” indicator Test ready doesn’t always mean P-Plate ready ! Choose a typical P-Plate driving journey Judge how you will go You’ll have to find your own way Review how you went

See a driving demonstration Instructor Driving [p.9] See a driving demonstration The instructor will give a “commentary” on ... Self-managing his driving behaviour Continuously self-assessing his driving Working out the cause of any mistake he makes and fixing it Giving examples of how unhelpful feelings can get in the way of safe driving

Get feedback on my driving (Supervisor) Supervisor driving [p.10] Get feedback on my driving (Supervisor) Refer to the “Good Driving Habits” checklist. The in-car situation should be as close as possible to a normal driving situation e.g. radio on, conversation with passengers. After the drive, review your performance using the checklist.

Get feedback on my driving (Learner) Learner driving [p.11] Get feedback on my driving (Learner) Refer to the P-plate ready indicator (hard copy). (This exercise may not be able to be completed in the allocated time, it may have to be completed later during a paid session)

See a driving skill being taught Learner driving [p.4] See a driving skill being taught What skill do you want to learn? You should want to do it well. You should be told when you ARE and ARE NOT doing it correctly. You should practice the correct way, over and over again. You should want to keep doing it CORRECTLY and with LITTLE OUTSIDE HELP.
