Revolutions in the New World Unit 2 Section 3 Important Events

ESSENTIAL QUESTION Explain how ideological exchange of Enlightenment ideas led to revolutions around the world.

European Nationalism Napoleon inadvertently brought Nationalism to the people he conquered He did this in two forms: 1. The conquered people united in their hatred of the invaders 2. The conquered recognized the power of Nationalism & National Unity

The Congress of Vienna & The Generation of Oppression Nationalism was strangled for an entire generation due to the Congress of Vienna; from 1814—1848 Conservatism (tradition & social stability) was the political thought of the time Principle of Intervention adopted by the “Great Powers” Traditionally powerful nations would intervene in other nations to make sure that conservative rulers were put in place

Ideological Exchange Ideas travel from one area of the world to another through people. Enlightenment ideologies travel from Europe to the British colonies—from the British colonies back to France and to Latin America. Why can’t everyone have Natural Rights?

Meanwhile in the Americas… Revolutionaries educated in Europe and exposed to Enlightenment ideologies begin to rise up in the New World Inspiration and hope are drawn from the successful revolutions of the United States and France

Independence for Mexico Spain is struggling to maintain it’s far flung colonial empire. Those living in New Spain (Mexico) have grown frustrated with the inequality in the territory. Revolutionary fighting breaks out in 1810 and continues on and off until 1821. August of 1821 Mexico gains her independence from Spain

Revolutions in South America Revolutionaries begin uprisings in many South American countries. Jose de san Martin and Simon Bolivar lead or contribute to revolutions in eight nations. The inspiration for these revolutions comes largely from the French Revolution.

A Truly New World Following the era of the Enlightenment and resulting revolutions, the western world completely changes Democracies, Republics, Constitutional Governments and Constitutional Monarchies now exist en masse. Democratic ideas of the ancient world have made their way to the modern world!
