Building Green and staying healthy By: Leslie Brotsch

Alternative Building As time goes on and humans populate more and more and our natural resources will soon come to an end. So in order to make our recourses last as long as possible we need to look into alternative ways to construct our homes, and buildings. By building green, it also helps with our quality of life, because we are no longer heavily polluting the water and air around us.

Task Collect information on alternative building materials, indoor air pollution and water refuge techniques that you will later use to help develop a proposal for remodeling your home.

Process – Quest One Please watch http://science.kqed.org/quest/video/green-building-revolution/ and answer: Define what LEED stands for What are the five key areas that LEED looks into What are the rating levels for buildings from lowest to highest using the LEED standards What type of water is used to flush builds waste What building is one of the most environmentally friendly in the world What does V.O.C. stand for when discussing paint and flooring adhesive

Process- Quest Two Analyze 10 of the alternative building materials at http://dsc.discovery.com/tv-shows/curiosity/topics/10-natural-building-materials.htm. In complete sentences: explain each type of alternative building material What it is used for What makes it work (how do it go together, are there any additives that put in it) Why is it better, are there any disadvantages for the material One fact that you did not know or you felt was interesting about each material.

Process Quest Three Air pollution in all around us, it is in the air you breathe outside and surprisingly the air your breath inside your home. Air quality is something to always consider when building new construction or when you are remodling. It is important to have air exchange within any structure both during the building process and during times of occupancy. We all know that air pollution is bad for us, so what are some things that we can do in improve the air quality within our homes?

Use the Site Written to Answer Each Question What are some sources of indoor air pollution http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/indoorairpollution.htm Who is most susceptible to indoor air pollution? http://www.who.int/indoorair/en/ In your own opinion why do you think this is? What is Radon http://www.epa.gov/eogapti1/course422/ap4.html What are 6 examples of combustibles http://www.epa.gov/eogapti1/course422/ap4.html

Use the Site Written to Answer Each Question How can you improve the quality of the air in a build? http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/indoorairpollution.htm How does outdoor air enter the house? http://www.who.int/indoorair/en/ What are some natural ways that we can help keep the air clean inside our home? http://www.preventcancer.com/consumers/household/indoor_air_poll.htm

Process- Quest Four Water refuge has become increasingly considered when building or redesigning a home. It is a way to reduce the cost of water bills and is good for the environment. Rainwater Collection Systems and Grey Water Reclamation Systems are two popular ways to reuse water.

Rainwater Collection Systems

Rainwater Collection System Using http://www.rainxchange.com/ answer the following questions. What is rainwater rich with? Using rainwater to water your plants will reduces the need to . How many gallons of water does 1” of rain fall create over a 2,000 square foot roof house?

Grey Water Reclamation System

Grey Water Reclamation System Use http://www.letsgogreen.com/greywater-recycling.html to answer the following questions What is gray water? What is black water? What are 4 benefits of using gray water for irrigation? What are 4 reasons why you should not use gray water for irrigation? What could a poorly design gray water system become a pathway for? How long can you store gray water for?

Conclusion- Task The Proposal After finding out all this information on alternatives for building materials, indoor air pollution and water refuge, please put together a proposal that addresses a plan for a greener house.

Proposal Must Include If you could remodel your home: What are parts of each of the addressed areas would you include and why Include 4 alternative building materials and explain each one If your house would meet the LEED requirement and to what level What would you do to have clean air within your home, both naturally and technologically Would you have a gray water, rainwater or both systems within your house and why include the benefits but also some possible disadvantages What parts would not include and why What parts would you want to leave the same and why?

Evaluation Quest one 50 points Quest two 100 points Student answered each question correctly with proper spelling and grammar Quest two 100 points Student answered all parts of the question in complete sentences with proper spelling and grammar 2 points a piece Students explain each type of alternative building material What it is used for What makes it work Why is it better and or disadvantages of the material One fact that they did not know or felt was interesting about each material.

Evaluation Quest three 70 points Quest Four 100 points Each question is worth 10 points each Answer must be correct and in complete sentences with proper spelling a grammar Quest Four 100 points

Evaluation Conclusion task- The Proposal 200 points One part of each of the addressed areas was include Student Include 4 alternative building materials and explain each one Student indicated If house would meet the LEED requirement and to what level What they would do to have clean air within the home, both naturally and technologically Student will indicate if they will have a gray water, rainwater or both systems within their house and what the benefits are and also some possible disadvantages Student indicated what parts were not include and why Student indicated what parts they wanted to leave the same and why? Student answered all parts of the question in complete sentences with proper spelling and grammar
