Calibration Web Innovations 2017

What is Calibration?? Calibration is all about verification and making adjustments if needed. When you calibrate you’re making a comparison. If you’re controlling a production process we want to make sure the outcomes are in line with the specifications. Device / Instrument -> What parameter, value: Multimeter: voltage, current, resistance, continuity Each of the variables are meeting the specifications for that instrument and that’s where Calibration comes in. Ruler, weight scale, thermometer

Why do we need calibration? To ensure Consistency of production / Conformity to specifications so that when we make measurements on your devices and have the confidence on the info we’re receiving. The product you’re producing is consistent and meets the requirements for the end user.

When is calibration critical? Low tolerance for any type of calibration error because of the risk involved in a failure Medical industry, Aerospace > very demanding requirements for calibration and process control Creating a medication > Consistent dosing Reactor coolant pump inspection Aerospace > Aircraft manufacturer: components come loose or come apart when it’s not expected

Walk thorough a calibration event Device/Instrument you will be testing Understand the requirements and characteristics Identify what standards or references you have Other Instruments, standard units Procedure - Traceability Devices used for the test are calibrated back to a reference so they are consistent - Calibration Intervals Method for adjustments / disposal If needed When the instrument is calibrated technicians know that it’s working correctly Device, process, or an instrument, that variables? Temperature Standard that will serve as a reference Traceability means the ability to trace the calibration of each instrument to its ultimate calibration source. Based on the outcome of the calibration procedure we can choose to adjust or not depending on the calibration tolerance

Does my equipment needs calibration? What is the risk of failure? What is the risk of a non-conformance? Most manufacturers assign a calibration interval. A month, a year or two depending on the product -Also based on the company’s knowledge of how it operates over time.

Risk of not calibrating We hear that calibration is Waste of time and money, things don’t fail The problem comes when you don’t maintain these systems and equipment The true cost of quality comes to bear when you have a failure The cost of calibrating a device in the factory is insignificant but when you look at what it takes to bring a product back from your customers, or to say to your customers “I’m sorry it’s not working correctly” > not only money but reputation,.

Champs Calibration Instrument Calibration Frequency Calibration History Location History Technicians Instrument: define all the different instruments / devices we have in our stock Calibration Frequency: We can setup different calibration frequencies and procedures for a device. Weekly / Yearly maintenance. Calibration History: The records for every calibration event. With dates, technicians and results. Location History: keep track of where the instruments are at all time. Technicians: Calibration technicians grouped in crews that are eventually assigned to a calibration instrument / event.

Hands-On Practice Locate the <Weight Scale 01> instrument Identify current instrument details Calibration Tolerance Calibration Frequency Review previous calibrations and Location history Update Location History Enter the Calibration Forecast window Proceed with calibration performance

Procedure CHAMPS-SCALE1 Health o Meter - Dial Scale - Model HAP301 SCALE CALIBRATION Place scale on a flat, level surface. A hard surface is best for maximum accuracy. Place 10lbs weight and check the pointer. If adjustment needed: Locate the adjustment control on edge of scale. Adjust so the indicator reads 10. Place and remove the weight to check the “10 lbs" setting. If pointer does not return to 10, repeat Step #3.

Main points Instrument Forecast Calibration Technicians The Next Due Date will auto-populate based on the frequency chosen. Forecast Calibration(s) that are due within the specified date range. It also allows modifying Next Scheduled, Scheduled Date & Technician fields. Calibration Results, performed by, how many hours it took, if a DPIR was issued Technicians Individual employees are related to a Technician code as their qualifications and training allows Actual Calibration measurements are not recorded in the database. The measurements are recorded on a printed copy of the procedure and these are saved as plant record documentation. DPIR Issued Was a “Draft Project Impact Report issued? Cal Range User-defined Calibration range of the Instrument. MFG Tol Manufacturers calibration tolerance Rpt Tol Reportable tolerance required when in use OOT: out of tolerance
