How to use a Radiation Meter to Survey for Contamination Verify that the meter has been calibrated within the last year. Do not use the meter if it is past the calibration date. Perform a battery check on the meter. Turn the meter’s control knob to the “Bat” position and verifying that the needle swings to the battery OK position. Turn the control knob to place the meter at its most sensitive scale. Slowly pass the probe over the area or object to be surveyed. Survey at a distance of 1-2cm above the surface. Check your hands, wrists, forearms, lab coat sleeves/front/pockets, and the bottom of your shoes. Check for contamination on laboratory surfaces including the table top, sink and floor. If contamination is found, follow the Radioactive Spill Procedure clean-up instructions.
