Disasters- Effects on Childhood Development Any occurrences in childhood including life-threatening situations stemming from natural or man-made disasters and catastrophes; severe physical injury; torture; traumatic loss of family members, friends and other significant attachment figures; loss of one’s community or social environment causes children become rather vulnerable, especially when they are witnesses to violence and disasters.( Sagi- Schwartz, 2008)

"The quality of resilience can be identified even in young and vulnerable children...social competence, problem-solving skills, autonomy, and a sense of purpose. All these qualities may be inculcated in young children through skillful and sensitive caregiving. All are needed for children to feel confident in facing future circumstances that threaten their identity and well-being" (Brooker & Woodhead, 2008, p 48.)

“Books should give children the chance to explore new things and ideas, and labelling books, and certain subjects, as only for one gender prevents them from doing this,” says Alexandra Strick, of children’s literature project Inclusive Minds. Her co-founder Beth Cox, adds, “These books reinforce stereotypes about what it means to be a boy or a girl, and therefore make children who don’t conform to these stereotypes more vulnerable to bullying and at risk of low self-esteem”. According to (Derman-Sparks & Edwards, 2010), it is important to have a book with stereotypes in the classroom specifically to engage children’s critical thinking. Every subject area of an early childhood program has the potential to address anti-bias education themes and activities that includes explorations of gender, ability, racial identity, culture, and economic class among children.

 This presentation, (Power Point) represents my own unique form of art to share everything I learned in EDUC 6357: Diversity, Development, and Learning What I learned about children's identities and development and the ways in which each is impacted by bias, discomfort, and trauma has given me a new way of rethinking Early childhood education. Teaching in the field ECE extends beyond the classroom Address all anti-bias issues of injustice with young children Assist children making sense of both physical and social world around them Use curriculum approaches that are responsive to children developmental and intellectual pursuits Advocate for children and their families/ Respecting Differences in Family Structures ( Recognizing and identifying how personal bias and prejudices impact professional and personal interactions.
