Ask Yourself the Following Questions Fulbright 101: The Basics Ask Yourself the Following Questions If money and time were no object - you have no student debt, you do not care about the cost of living/living conditions/weather, you are guaranteed your dream position in grad school or a job when you return…. What would you do that involves teaching or research? Where would you do it? How can the Fulbright U.S. Student Program help you meet this goal? For more information, visit: http://eca.state.gov/fulbright http://us.fulbrightonline.org

Fulbright Goals Each Fulbright country’s needs are different. Always Keep in Mind…. Fulbright’s Goal Each Fulbright country’s needs are different. Your interests and your host country’s interests may not always converge. You need to be flexible as possible. Scholarship and teaching are just one aspect of the goals of the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. To increase mutual understanding between people of the U.S. and people of other countries through exchange For more information, visit: http://eca.state.gov/fulbright http://us.fulbrightonline.org

Choosing Your Site Research Award Applicants: Study Award Applicants: Where is the most cutting-edge or interesting research on my topic being done? Where do my professors spend their research leave? Where did I do a URA award or do a non-credit research project? Can I expand that project for a year-long one? Where did I study abroad? Did I do research there? Were there any professors teaching or researching topics I am interested in? Is my field of academic interest possible in my potential host country? What subfield of my major do I want to study? What kind of research is being done at the institution where I want to study? What is unique about the program I am considering? Is this program readily available in the U.S.? Who are the names in the field that my faculty advisors mention? Is a funded master’s degree available at that institution? Did you study in the country or institution where you are considering a Master’s degree? Can you talk with the faculty in your field? Do we want to list the number of awards on the slide for the tutorials in case it changes in the future? For more information, visit: http://eca.state.gov/fulbright http://us.fulbrightonline.org

Choosing Your Site ETA Award Applicants: All Applicants: What kind of service activities have I done before and while at UMBC? What teaching, tutoring, mentoring or advising work is on my resume? Have I had any course work in linguistics, education, or any foreign language? What kind of cultural-studies course content have I had at UMBC? Do I want to work with young children, older children, or young adults? Am I flexible with where I can serve as an ETA (i.e., in rural areas, in poorer/underserved communities, in a less developed country)? What does my host country want/need? What specific skills will my plans require? Do I have those skills? Do I have the language proficiency? Can I gain that proficiency by the start of the program? How is my subject is researched, or how is English taught in my host country? How do I plan to engage with the people and culture of my host country? How do I plan to serve my host country and my host community? Do we want to list the number of awards on the slide for the tutorials in case it changes in the future? For more information, visit: http://eca.state.gov/fulbright http://us.fulbrightonline.org

Choosing Your Site Candidate Profile Placement Type (for ETAs) The Candidate Profile is a job description. Do not apply for a you do not qualify for. Key words of a challenging assignment can include independent, flexible, mature, and resourceful. Previous teaching experience strongly preferred means what it says. The Placement Type gives clues to your day-to-day work life. Placements are at primary, secondary or post-secondary institutions. Will also let you know if you need to have an outside community service project. Do we want to list the number of awards on the slide for the tutorials in case it changes in the future? For more information, visit: http://eca.state.gov/fulbright http://us.fulbrightonline.org
