Excursion: Dykanka- Oposhnya

There is an arch at the entrance to Dikan'ka There is an arch at the entrance to Dikan'ka . In 1820, the arch was built by architect Luigi Rusca in honor of Alexander I. The arch was built in classical style following the example of the famous Arc de Triomphe in Paris.

Nicholas church, with an underground Kochubei’s crypt Nicholas church was built by the famous architect N. Lvov in 1974. It was considered a generic, princes and wealthy guests prayed there. During its construction the architect showed his awareness of the ecclesial tradition of the early Christians of southern Europe, where a building was erected in the shape of a rotunda.

In the basement of St. Nicholas Church there is the tomb of generic and original sarcophagi. A few generations of Kochubei lie there. And this church is famous for the fact that when Maria Ivanovna Gogol-Janowska’s children (the mother of Nikolai Gogol) one after the other were born dead, she was advised to go to pray to the icon of "St. Nicholas“ in this church. Every week she went 30 km to pray there. She gave a birth to the boy in the spring, and named him Nicholas.

Old-timers of those times are 4 majestic oaks, their age are about 500 years, they have witnessed the most interesting historical events unfolding in these parts.

In addition, there is a comprehensive natural monument of national importance - "Parasotskoe tract," one of the best arrays of broad-leaved forests.

In Dikanka there is also Lilac Grove In Dikanka there is also Lilac Grove. It was planted for Kochubey’s granddaughter Anna, who was terminally ill. To make her happy somehow, from all over Europe brought lilac bushes and planted them along the ravines. This flowering "purple island" was so beautiful that she was feeling better, but as soon as the lilacs bloomed, with wilted petals faded and her life. According to the legend, the soul of Anna settled in lilac grove and the nightingales sing every of her best songs.

Ukraine has been considered as one of the greatest countries in the world of pottery: in the beginning of the twentieth century in our country there were about 700 settlements, where potters worked. And though since then their number has declined significantly, there are still settlements where work craftsmen who creatively develop the traditions of Ukrainian pottery. One of these places is Oposhnya.

In 1986, Oposhnya, on behalf of the Council of Ministers of Ukraine, is a museum of pottery. Nowadays the museum-reserve is Ukrainian research center of conservation and pottery heritage of Ukraine. There is a unique collection of clay toys. Collection of foreign pottery is formed. Over the past few years, the museum collection has replenished with new exhibits. The latest addition was in 2014.
