PRESENTATION TO PORTFOLIO COMMITTEE ON ENERGY 25 JULY 2013 COGENERATION PRESENTATION TO PORTFOLIO COMMITTEE ON ENERGY 25 JULY 2013

DICK KRUGER DEPUTY HEAD TECHNO -ECONOMICS

COGENERATION GENERATE ELECTRICITY BY USING WASTE BY PRODUCTS WASTE HEAT MUST BE ECONOMICALLY VIABLE

BENEFITS OF COGENERATION ECONOMICALLY VIABLE COGENERATION COULD PROMOTE ECONOMIC TRANSFORMATION, REDUCE DEPENDENCE ON ESKOM REDUCE NEED FOR NEW GENERATION MITIGATE GREEN HOUSE GASES EMISSION REDUCE COST OF ELECTRICITY ELIMINATE ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS

COGENERATION OPPORTUNITIES IN MINING INDUSTRY UTILISATION COAL FINES FROM DISCARD DUMPS FOR ELECTRICITY GENERATION. ENABLE THE REHABILITATION OF THE DUMPS AND MITIGATE ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS.   USING METHANE EMISSIONS FROM MINES TO GENERATE ELECTRICITY. REDUCING THE ASSOCIATED GREEN HOUSE GAS EMISSIONS. HEAT RECOVERY FROM METALLURGICAL PROCESSES. ENHANCING THE ENERGY EFFICIENCY OF SUCH PLANTS.

COGENERATION MODES UTILISING ELECTRICITY ON SITE USING NATIONAL GRID TO TRANSMIT ELECTRICITY TO A CONTRACTED CUSTOMER SELLING ELECTRICITY INTO GRID (IPP)

IMPEDIMENTS THE CHARGES IMPOSED BY ESKOM FOR THE USE OF THE NATIONAL GRID DISCOURAGES COGENERATION INITIATIVES   SOME MUNICIPALITIES ARE NOT WILLING TO ACCEPT COGENERATED ELECTRICITY

RECOMMENDATION A COMPREHENSIVE NATIONAL POLICY ON COGENERATION AIMED AT FACILITATING SUCH PROJECTS BE FORMULATED AND ADOPTED
