Today Recap the Behaviourism Explain the key features of the Social Learning theory Outline and evaluate the research and main findings of Bandura et al Evaluation skills and practice evaluating the Learning Approach

Behaviourism – classical & operant conditioning Social learning theory The Learning Approach Behaviourism – classical & operant conditioning Social learning theory

Classical conditioning https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhqumfpxuzI Complete the terms below based on the Pavlov’s dogs clip UCS = UCR = NS = CS = CR = From Big Bang Theory (OC)

Operant conditioning: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOgowRy2WC0 Positive reinforcement Negative reinforcement Punishment Match the situations below with the key terms above: Emma’s home is repossessed because she has not been keeping up with her mortgage payments. Beth likes to tell jokes because her friends usually laugh. Ian always does his homework so that he doesn’t get any detentions. James likes to volunteer at the charity shop because it makes him feel good about himself.

Social learning theory: Mediational (Cognitive) processes SLT is the bridge between learning theory and the cognitive approach. The cognitive approach values mental processes These mental factors mediate in the learning process to determine if a response is acquired Write these on the wall boards and try to define these (you should have come across these terms when doing the approaches grid homework) If you are stuck – look these up in your pack or a textbook. Attention Retention Motor reproduction Motivation

SLT and Applying key concepts Complete the handout on applying key concepts Need extra support? Use the text books (Green haired girl page 108 and smart devices)

Bandura’s research https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zerCK0lRjp8

Exam skills: How do we evaluate the approaches Strengths of the approach e.g. makes use of the scientific method. Limitations of the approach e.g. fails to explain aspects of behaviour. Contributions made to understanding human behaviour. Practical/useful applications. Issues and debates linked to the approach. Comparisons with another approaches.

Evaluation activity Evaluation is a skill! It takes time and practice to become an effective evaluator! Developing these skills will require you to think about evaluation points and why they are important.

Are the following strengths or limitations of the learning approach and why? Classical Conditioning has led to the developments for treatments of phobias such as systematic desensitisation. Behaviourism makes use of the scientific method, insisting on being objective and studying observable behaviour The learning approach underestimates the role of nature The social learning theory can explain cultural differences in behaviour. Much of the research within the Behaviourist approach uses animals.
