Communication in Practice Quiz What are rapport talk and report talk? Write down an example of a time you personally used rapport talk. Write down an example of a time you personally used report talk. What in the two articles do you agree and disagree with? Why? What communication behaviors can you remember from your childhood friendships?

Codes of Gender (To 12:15)

Constructed Gender Men of the Wodaabe, dressed up for Gerewol

Social Construction Today we’ll talk about differences in gender presentations Where they come from is more important than what they are The latter changes like any other type of culture Socially constructed ≠ fake http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GbPeF s7uDLM

In Small Groups (4 people) What childhood stories of communication did you write down? What is a sociolinguistic subculture? How do Maltz and Borker say sociolinguistic structures impact differences in communication between men and women? Do you buy it? Why or why not?

Rapport Talk vs. Report Talk “A way of establishing connections and negotiating relationships. Emphasis is placed on displaying similarities and matching experiences” (190). Examples? Report talk “A means to preserve independence and negotiate and maintain status in a hierarchical social order. This is done by exhibiting knowledge and skill, and by holding center stage through verbal performance” (190).

In Small Groups (4 people) Do you think men and women use talk differently? If so, how and why? If not, why not? These articles were both written at least 20 years ago. Do you think they still portray gender accurately?

Women’s Talk Men’s Talk Ask more questions “Shitwork” Positive minimal response to show engagement Silent protest Use of “you” and “we” More interjections Acknowledge what other said Rapport talk More in private Likely to share more thoughts and feelings More likely to interrupt More likely to dispute/argue More likely to ignore partner’s utterances Try to control conversation More declarations of fact Jokes and stories common Report talk More in public Likely to dismiss more thoughts and feelings

What would happen if we tried to list similarities?

Summary Differences in communication between women and men might be explained by growing up in different cultures Gender is as socially constructed as other types of communication The source of difference in gendered communication is controversial and far from universally accepted Look for patterns and connections to theory in your Fieldnotes 1

Preview for Wed. Seizer “On the Uses of Obscenity” Be prepared for some cursing in class Seizer “On the Uses of Obscenity” What is the social business of cursing for comics? How does it help them achieve their ends? How do curse words gain their power? How does context change the meaning of cursing? Murray, “Swearing as a Function of Gender” Compare this to your own experiences with gender differences in cursing Fieldnotes 1 due in ONE WEEK
