Creative media sector
In this power point I will be discussing the differences and similarities that the different types of companies in the creative media sector and explaining the different aspects of these companies and conglomerates. Overview
Netflix Netflix is a multinational media company that focuses on online streaming of television series and films. Netflix is strictly a streaming service and does not broadcast as a normal television broadcast. Netflix is strictly a streaming service. As of late netflix have been commissioning shows of there own to be shown specifically on their streaming service, the company has also been buying shows that have been cancelled or have finished and bring them back to their audiences screen.
Private ownership Private ownership means one of two things, it can mean that the founders or owners own the company outright or that the owner of the company is the person who owns the majority of shares, this only applies if the company is publicly traded When Netflix was founded by Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph in 1997 it was made a publicly traded company, this means that members of the public can buy shares of the company but the obviously the founders keep the majority percentage.
Sources of income As Netflix is a subscription based streaming service most of their income will come from the subscription service. This service is reasonably priced at £7 per month. As Netflix advertise that it is £7 flat rate per month all the features are available for this price, there are no premium features that can be purchased and the full service is available for this price
Product Due to the nature of the content that Netflix provide the range product is vast, this means that there is a diversity in the programs that Netflix provides whether it is Documentary, Film , Television series Etc.. Netflix also provides a lot of variety in the programming that they produce. They have a range of series and films that would be part of all the aforementioned categories. Netflix make these to satisfy gaps in their viewership and judging by the numbers of subscriptions that have been purchased in the last 2 years this has worked
Competitors Netflix because of its popularity has understandably started to gain competitors in the world of online streaming although these competitors are making up ground on Netflix none have come close yet with the likes of amazon prime being the largest of the competitors Amazon prime is very similar to Netflix in a few ways, it has a similar product delivery system in the streaming service and they produce their own content in the form of shows such as the man in the high castle
Sky Sky is a multi faceted broadcasting service that uses digital television boxes to stream shows to the homes of its paying viewers Sky is owned by news corporation, this means that it is very well funded and is at the forefront of television entertainment
Private ownership & history Sky television started life at SATV (Satellite television ltd.) established by Brian Haynes in 1980 In 1983 Rupert Murdoch had shown interest in the cable service and proceeded to hold talks with SATV owners eventually buying substantial shares in the organization By 1984 Murdoch had renamed the service Sky and had extended the viewing hours and expanded the programming to fit a wider range of shows By the mid 1980’s Murdoch had drawn up a plan to switch from cable television to direct to home satellite which would make for far greater numbers reached and was more cost effective in the long run, up to present day this system is still in use along with its sky digital and streaming counterparts.
Sources of income Sky has a multi layered system of income , this is accomplished by offering different packages to different viewers who are looking for different things instead of one all inclusive packages. Viewers are allowed to pick and choose between what package they would like depending on their viewing preference for instance if the viewer is a sports fan they can choose the sports pack along with the packages you get when you buy the standard packages , this includes all the sports channels available for most sports. This also stands for movies and music . The fact that sky have such a plethora of of channels in their different versions of their platform these extra packages such as sport cost a lot more to add on to your standard package and can drive the price up substantially
Product Sky use their platform to air original shows such as a league of their own and fortitude These shows are aired on one of the many sky entertainment channels such as Sky 1 , Sky Atlantic and Sky Arts. These shows usually do very well as they have massive financial backing from sky and usually feature big name actors and celebrity guests and have massive production value Sky uses these shows to spearhead their channel and gain more viewers On the other hand they have contracted channels that show original content from other shows and networks such as sky Atlantic showing HBO originals such as Game of Thrones
Competitors Sky as a company has blown most of its competitors out of the water by providing services that are exclusive to the sky channels such as their sports channel, premiere movie service and on demand streaming service, they also revolutionized live viewing with the Sky + service allowing you to pause live tv and record certain shows when you are unable to watch them Although sky have nearly cornered the market there are still companies that pop up every now and again to try and challenge their supremacy these are services such as Free view, Virgins TiVo service and the BT television service These services offer a similar version of the system sky uses but with certain differences especially in price, the most similar of these being Virgins TiVO box which allows you to pause and record live tv
