Taiwan is an island located off the southeast coast of China. Tyjuan Slade Troup Middle

Geography Taiwan has a high mountain interior. Taiwan has a flat coastal plain, with sandy beaches and forests. Taiwan’s highest peak is Yu Shan at 3,997m. Taiwan has a subtropical monsoon climate. More than half the island is covered with forest. Animal species include the Asian black monkey, bear, mongooses, foxes, and deer.

Society People that live in the Taiwan area are called Taiwanese. The first people to settle in the island were the Portuguese, they called it The “Beautiful Island”. In 1971 Taiwan lost the Chinese seat at the United Nations to China. It’s official language is mandarin Chinese.

Facts The capital of Taiwan is Taipei. Taiwan’s form of government is a multiparty republic with two legislative houses. It’s largest cities are Taipei, Kaohsiung, T’aichung, and T’ainan. It’s major resources are coal, gold, copper, petroleum, natural gas, rice, and fisheries.

Economy The island of Taiwan has one of the most powerful economies in Asia. Farming use to be major form of food; now, food has to be imported. Well developed road and network serves much of the land.
