The Opening Residency By George Lehman, Bluffton University

Goals Create a learning community that can function at a distance for the next year. 2nd residency is an international trip the next summer. Position the Collaborative MBA program in the context of Leadership for the Common Good. Re-introduce anxious adult learners to disciplined academic inquiry and provide graded feedback to reinforce this discipline. Practice using Zoom video conference technology. Orient students to the processes of a four-institution program. Meet program faculty in person or in live video.

Structure Do lots of preparatory reading and writing. Live in the same hotel. Participate in class sessions (including orientation and such) essentially all day for four and half days. Extensive discussion time. Eat noon and evening meals together. Noon on campus. Evening in a range of fun settings. More, but not too much, reading and writing. Planning for preparation and presentation of final course paper on Zoom in three weeks.

Books (substantial sections of each) Sun Tzu, The Art of War (!) Frederick Taylor, Principles of Scientific Management Pauline Graham, ed., Mary Parker Follett, Prophet of Management Robert Greenleaf, Servant Leadership Robert Goleman, Emotional Intelligence Howard Gardner, Leading Minds an Anatomy of Leadership

Writing Projects Pre-residency: summary and reaction paper During the residency: Discussion of servant leadership Post-residency: Extended case study of a particular leader through the lens of the course content.

My Assessment Student energy, anxiety and shared work experience carries the week. Great way to start. Intense, stimulating, fun and exhausting.

Overall Program Challenges The cumbersome academy X four? High trust levels needed! Who is in charge? Adjusting to an online world Online vs. face-to-face differences and quality Need new models for faculty incentives, expectations, accountability, and training. Simultaneous centralization and decentralization e.g. Academic advising varies Differing institutional cultures and practices.

Opportunities Current New educational models in the future?
