What Follows Baptism Matthew 4:1-11

Baptism & Temptation Mark the beginning and lens of Jesus’ public ministry – Jesus goes down into Baptism; the devil tempts him to go up and out of his Baptismal identity. Show Jesus as our Substitute (not just Model)

Baptism Matthew 3 (ESV) 13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. 14 John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” 15 But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented.

Baptism 16 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; 17 and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

Baptism Jesus is baptized as a human (like/for us) Jesus submits to a baptism of repentance from sin Jesus receives the human-empowering Holy Spirit Jesus receives the human identity-giving Word

If Baptism is: River Comfort Voice from heaven Strength Joy Baptism to Temptation If Baptism is: River Comfort Voice from heaven Strength Joy Then Temptation is: Desert Conflict Voice from hell Weakness Trial

Temptation In the Temptation Satan tests Jesus’ Baptism Jesus was baptized in our place and now passes the test of temptation in our place.

Temptation #1 Matthew 4 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.

Temptation #1 3 And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.”  4 But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Temptation #1 At point of Jesus’ human weakness: physical hunger Framed to question Jesus’ Baptismal identity Jesus’ response . . . “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” (Deut 8:3)

Temptation #1 Deuteronomy 8:2-3 – Israel’s Testing in the Wilderness 2 And you shall remember the whole way that the Lord your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not.

Temptation #1 Deuteronomy 8:2-3 – Israel’s Testing in the Wilderness 3 And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.

Temptation #2 5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple 6 and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, “‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and “‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”

‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Temptation #2 7 Jesus said to him, “Again it is written,  ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

Temptation #2 Movement is upward Again questions Jesus’ Baptismal identity: “If you really are the Son of God . . .” Uses Scripture Jesus’ response “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” (Deut 6:16)

Temptation #3 8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.”

‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’” Temptation 10 Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God     and him only shall you serve.’” 11 Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.

Temptation #3 Movement is upward Offers quick way to “prove” Jesus’ authority Jesus’ response “Be gone, Satan! For it is written,‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’” (Deut 6:13)

Jesus’ Baptism - Temptation & Us As our Substitute, Jesus freely gives us his Baptismal identity: “You (yes you!) are my beloved child in whom I am well pleased – period.”

Jesus’ Baptism - Temptation & Us The Spirit leads us into places of testing in order to confirm more deeply our true (Baptismal) identity.

Jesus’ Baptism - Temptation & Us Satan uses our times of testing (suffering) to tempt us to reject our Baptismal identity. Jesus has successfully completed what Israel could not and we cannot – passed the test of temptation - our identity in temptation is Christ.

Jesus’ Baptism - Temptation & Us Our identity as God’s beloved children is as solid and lasting as Christ himself. This is the Good News of the Gospel – thanks be to God!
