Economic Boom 1945, US produced 50 percent of the world’s manufactured goods. 50s + 60s, growing population demanded homes, cars, refrigerators, and thousands of other products. US invested into rebuilding Europe. American culture spread worldwide Movies TV programs Music (Jazz and rock and roll).

Continued… America’s postwar economic strength impacted social systems in the US. Americans moved from the cities to the suburbs. The movement to communities outside an urban area is known as suburbanization. Highways allowed residents to commute by car. Sunbelt States “Southern States” saw an increase in population.

Civil Rights Movement Although African American won their freedom in the 1860s, southern states denied them equality up to the 1960s. Segregation was legal. African American faced discrimination.

Martin Luther King Jr. Preacher, who emerged as a leader of the Civil Rights movement. Inspired by Gandhi, organized boycotts and peaceful marches to end segregation in the U.S.. Many Americans of all races joined movement. 1963, King made his “I have a dream” speech.
