Compare and contrast: escalator and elevator

Moving materials against the concentration gradient Escalator is like active transport Elevator is like endocytosis/exocytosis Proteins can move materials in a pathway Energy is used to move from LOWER to HIGHER concentration – against the concentration gradient Materials become MORE concentrated – ions, glucose, etc. The membrane itself can surround material in little packages to move it. Usually large substances, or large amounts at one time. Endocytosis moves things into the cell – phagocytosis is the special name for “cell eating” Exocytosis moves things out of the cell.
