Robotics

By End of this workshop you will: Identify and recognize the robotics programs those have been implementing in CLF schools. Identify the steps for establishing a robotics program in your school. Identify Possible issues you might face during this process. Develop solutions and strategies to address these identified issues. Resource sharing -- Q&A

Robotics Programs ADDITIONAL OPTIONS FIRST VEX SEAPERCH JHU MS HS MS FLL FTC FRC ADDITIONAL OPTIONS Jr.FLL VEX IQ ES

Steps to establish a robotics program Decide which robotics program(s) you will offer Set tryout date(s) and Advertise the program Announce the accepted student list (e-mail/bulletin boards) Read robotics contract at the First meeting and have students/parents sign the contract Meeting structure: Idea sharing/discussions/task assignments/follow up and work with students. Communication with students/parents Don’t Forget to register your team for the competitions before registrations closed! Registrations open for first and vex teams

> Choose the robotics program(s) > create a description > Announce – Newsletter/school website/parent e-mail/etc. Example description: The Robotics Club gives students an opportunity for a hands-on experience with robotics. Students design, build and program robots. Create different robots to solve problems in real-world situations using the award-winning LEGO® MINDSTORM® NXT/EV3 and Boe-Bot robotics kits. This club is only for Middle school students. Club students will be able to participate to the FIRST FLL Robotics competitions. Final placement to the club will be based on the test which assess students' prior knowledge and an interview which evaluates students' interest on robotics. Tryout dates: ../../…. @3:15 in rm 207 And ../../…. @10am in rm 207

Tryout Advertise the program, tryout dates and locations at least a few week before the tryouts. Make sure you have at least one afterschool and one weekend time. tryout may involve a few sections On paper Logical questions – click here Questions to see if student is interested and dedicated -- Click Here Hands On Tower or bridge building out of popsicle sticks Interview Questions to see if student is interested and dedicated

Robotics Club Contract and meetings Collect signed robotics contract from each student – click here Using club time efficiently is the most important part of the robotics. Here are a few items that will help you to use your time efficiently, Create your team structure – team captain, programmers, designers, builders, project managers, etc. Have a meeting at the beginning of the each session, identify the tasks and assign them to specific students. Follow up the assigned tasks and work with students during club hours. Before end of the each session make sure you have students to clean up and organize all tools and materials.

Communication with students/parents There is a competition this weekend?! Or s/he never told me about competition/camp/etc.. Create the team ROSTER WITH PARENT E-MAILS/PHONE NUMBERS. sHARE ALL COMPETITION/ACTIVY INFORMATION WITH PARENTS A FEW WEEKS PRIOR TO THE EVENT DATE. YOU CAN CREATE E-MAIL GROUPS ON CLF PORTAL PARENT E-MAIL SENDER SYSTEM. Create ROBOTICS EVENT SCHEDULE/calendar DATE, NAME OF THE EVEN, LOCATION, ETC. – Click here

Start with a Safe Work Area Keep your work area clean and well lit. Cluttered benches and dark areas invite accidents. Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, near flammable liquids, gases, or dust. Power tools create sparks, which may ignite the dust or fumes. Keep bystanders, children, and visitors away when using a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control.

Have your stuff organized Make sure as a safety captain you ask your team members to put the tools and parts back where They belongs. Save the last 15-20 minutes of the build meeting to cleanup. Have a clean up day as one of the required meetings. Don’t have one person do all the clean up like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYJOyqkjr04

Safety Precautions Always read and understand the tool’s operation manual if you are using the tool for the first time or ask an veteran to help you. Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when using a power tool. Dress right. Do not wear gloves, loose clothes or jewelry. Contain long hair. Loose clothes, gloves, jewelry, or long hair can be caught in moving parts. Be sure the power tool’s switch is OFF before plugging it in Use safety equipment. Always wear eye protection. A dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection must be used when needed.

Do the Job Safely Use the power tool accessories only for the jobs for which they were designed. Secure and support the work piece. Use clamps and a stable work surface. Do not hold the work by hand or against your body. Do not touch the drill bit, blade, cutter or the work piece immediately after operation; they may be very hot and may burn you.
