The spread of Islam Islam started in the cities of Mecca and Medina in what is now Saudi Arabia following the teachings of the prophet Muhammad (pbuh) about CE 630.

Within 30 years of the prophet Muhammad's death, Islam was followed across the Near East, what is now Syria, Jordan, Iraq, Israel and Palestine as well as Egypt and Iran following successful military campaigns.

By CE 750 Islam had spread to North Africa and most of Spain, mainly by military conquest. The peace terms offered by the Muslim armies were always very generous, and people found Islam run by honest and passionate people, so converted.

By CE 1000, part of what is now Pakistan, India, Turkey and Greece were also incorporated into the Islamic Empire.
