THE FIVE FACTORS OF TRAINING AND PERFORMANCE THE FIVE S’s FOR ALL SPORTS Presented by Doug Soar, Level IV NCCP
REQUIREMENTS FOR AN ANNUAL PLAN THE FIVE S’s i) Strength ii) Speed iii) Skills Including: Mental, Technical and Tactical iv) Stamina v) Suppleness
THE INTERFERENCE PRINCIPLE (Hickson, 1985) Dr. Istvan Balyi, related in seminars that sport science research has shown that there is an ‘interference principle’ which affects the Five Factors. Certain factors cannot be trained simultaneously with each other, without having a detrimental effect on overall training, and performance goals.
THE INTERFERENCE PRINCIPLE (continued) To overcome the interference problem i) Prioritize certain training factors at specific times during the plan. ii) Hold other factors in maintenance mode This is achieved by sequencing the training program into various periods, which optimizes training and performance.

THE BALANCE OF YIN-YANG
One Is The Other The Balance of Yin-Yang is the blending of Technical, Tactical and Mental Skills. Remember, everything is in Balance.
THE FIVE FACTORS IN A YEARLY TRAINING PLAN The following chart shows how the five factors are included into a yearly training plan. It shows how emphasis is placed upon various factors while others are just maintained.
