Translating Text Types By: Dr. Naji Ibrahim Al-Arfaj Educator. Author. Translator. King Faisal University Deanship of E-Learning and Distance Education 1

Introductory Lecture (1)

Course content: Translating Text Types (Arabic-English/ English-Arabic): It Focuses on practice in translating a variety of texts related to media, culture, business, linguistic & academic materials.

Course rationale: This course has been suggested because: 1) It provides students with a much-needed involvement with actual text as used by professionals in different text-types. 2) The course gives the students a chance to apply certain semantic techniques applicable in the process of transporting meaning across languages. 3) It is needed for preparing students for carrying out specific tasks required in actual work settings.

Course objectives: By the end of the course, students should be able to: 1- Translate samples from the text-types covered in the course. 2- Apply semantic techniques and sense relations in their translation reflecting the ability to control information. 3- Show knowledge of requirements of each variety they translate in terms of cultural and linguistic features to suite the audience. 4- Produce English and Arabic translations which satisfy the norm and style of the text-type concerned in each language.

Teaching methods: The course makes use of the following teaching/learning methods: - Teacher prepared texts representing the text-types in the course. - Exercises focusing on specific areas of meaning. - Exercises focusing on information control to suite particular audiences. - Student’s demonstration of specific cases of application. - Quizzes and assignments.

References and teaching learning resources 1- Main Text for practical work: Teacher Prepared texts. 2- References and exercises for analysis: Texts for analysis are selected from previous translations and translated works. 3- Websites: WWW. Barnes and Noble Books online.

Just to know your instructor: Dr. Naji Ibrahim Al-Arfaj ... Was born in Hofuf, Al-Ahsa, Saudi Arabia in 1382H / 1962G. Finished his BA (with distinction) in English and translation at King Faisal University, Hofuf, KSA. Completed his MA and Ph.D. (with distinction) in Applied Linguistics at Michigan State University, USA. Spent more than 25 years in ESL/EFL teaching, reading, writing, translating, and researching. Author and translator of several books (available on the Internet- www.etawasol.org), some of his books, "Have You Discovered its Real Beauty?" , “Just One Message!” , & “What is His Nature?”. Gives public lectures around the world, and presents radio and TV programs. Director of the Inter-Cultural Communication and Dialogue Center (ICDC) in Hofuf, Al-Ahsa. And worked as Head of the Department of English Language at Imam University. Al-Ahsa Branch - the Eastern Province, Saudi Arabia. Travelled to many countries and participated in lots of conferences, seminars & committees. Trainer and facilitator in education, communication, dialogue, self development, and human resources (HR ).
