Unit 3 Research Illustration: Increase in college tuition Grace Kim

Subtopics: State controls on tuition Are the necessary benefits essential? Future cost & lowering tuition

Subtopic: State controls on tuition

Source: “The impacts of State control policies on college tuition increase” By Mikyung Minsun Kim & Jangwon Ko. The source consists more of statistical analysis. It will compare results in argumentation form in terms of tuition and fee for all public institutions. It also gives percentage compositions in the rate of tuition amount in college and universities. It will show how state controls are properly used but at the same time will show it’s flaws in controlling the necessary benefits it has to offer.

Source: “State cuts to college financial aid limits affordability” By Freddie Allen In this source, it provides meaningful necessity as to why such reasons exist for increase in tuition. It explains how because funding gets cut, there has to be some sort of predicament to fill in that whole in order to successfully avoid any difficulties in maintaining costs. Such action results from early-on recession where it meets the height of its peak. It also provides background information in state funds and how there were advantages and disadvantages in dealing with tuition altogether. There is no way of guaranteeing that tuition will recover its track, especially since the balance does not seem to be fixed.

Synthesis In both sources of “The impacts of State control policies on college tuition increase” and “State cuts to college financial aid limits affordability” pertain to the action of state funds and their role as balancing the tuition costs which will determine whether any more beneficial ideas will come into use or falter. While “The impacts of State control policies on college tuition increase” initiates with statistical analysis and the possible contributions to connecting state control policies, in the source “State cuts to college financial aid limits affordability” will find credibility in bringing advantages and disadvantages to suggested conclusions. State controls use means of cutting funds and making funds that favor towards the public. But in situations that puts them at disadvantage is the start of recession which has brought increase not just in tuition but also in financial aid and loans.

Subtopic: Are the necessary benefits essential?

Source: “Students rely on federal loans to pay rising tuition… Source: “Students rely on federal loans to pay rising tuition….” By Robert Tomsho The source relies on the confliction between increasing tuition vs. increasing financial aid provided and how it will affect future references. While federal grants are offered to programs and such, so has federal loans which put students in debt and more causation. This indicates that such measures will not only increase loans but will also show the disadvantages of increasing federal grants and loans altogether in general. Both federal loans and grants may have increased due to the rise in tuition of course. But because they’re trying to receive more students, the federal loans increase in a much higher and faster rate compared to federal grants and aids.

Source: “Do the benefits of college still outweigh the costs Source: “Do the benefits of college still outweigh the costs?” By Jaison R. Abel & Richard Deitz This source will be more based on background knowledge and information. Given that it produces certain aspects and provision, it can be said that this source will offer analytical representation as well as statistical analysis to compare the benefits of having HS diploma, bachelors, and associates degree. In terms of whether the background comes with a degree or not will determine the wage it receives as well as advantages of having a degree altogether and how much money can be earned, saved, and processed towards future reference. Despite knowing some knowledge, there are doubts pertaining to whether college or university degree really makes a difference and how much benefits can be provided or enough to give good investment.

Source: “College tuition soar, but aid grows as well…” By June Kronholz This source gives good background statistical characteristics while proclaiming the cost of tuition to continue rising. It claims that, when comparing private and public institutions, it has increased in the range of 5 to at least 10 percent. In conclusion, it will certainly not falter in increasing more expenses because of how the program functions and the way it sucks in wages. Because of the sudden increase, financial aid has also made its way up but not enough to cover or deal with difficult expenses. This can also relate to the subtopic of financial aid and its benefits.

Synthesis In the three sources provided, “Students rely on federal loans to pay rising tuition,” “Do the benefits of college still outweigh the costs?” and “College tuition soar, but aid grows as well,” it will show how financial aid is being processed as well as the progress it makes to meet the standards of covering expenses. When we think of college tuition, we think of working and saving, which leads to paying the costs to our order. Due to the lack of understanding what goes behind the meaning of financial aid, we look towards financial growth. By that, it means financial grants and loans. In all of the sources, it gives information relating to how, even when federal grants are offered to ease expenses, federal loans follow up towards that line.

Subtopic: Future cost & lowering tuition

Source: “Years of cuts threaten to put College out of reach for more students” By Michael Leachman & Michael Mitchell This source will represent not only background information but also argumentative types. It provides accurate statistical analysis with charts and graphs that represent certain categories of states in how much it has increased in tuition. These states show in different conditions and how well affected each has been in terms of cost. It also shows the pain in family income and how non-beneficial it has become and how there are few options to resolve such measures. It can be based argumentative because with all the background information it provides and how it will display conflicts in some actions taken such as cuts in state funding, which can relate to the subtopic of state control.

Source: “A study in lowering tuition…” By Melissa Korn This source will base on background knowledge and information. It will show about how schools have cut down prices in use of discounts. The purpose for such measures is due to the fact it should meet the expectations of family needs. But it is not enough or within the standards to cover up expenses. The discounts that they have acquired to benefit families have only displayed appeal to the public or good standing when it doesn’t necessarily mean it will fixed towards that direction. It also doesn’t mean that it will somehow decrease or ease the cost of education or within the cost range.

Source: “Public-College tuition rise is largest in 3 decades” By Elizabeth F. Farelle This source provides evidence of how tuition has been rising for a long time and will most likely never stop its track from increasing. It provides report on tuition fees and its steady increase at public institutions. It will show reasons as to why the increase seems to engage a lot towards expenses and the relationship between university/college state necessity or appropriations and the rival of tuition fees. There will also be witnesses from students that have reviewed about the increase in cost of education. It provides a chart for college institutions that show percentages in 1-year increase costs.

Synthesis When it comes to predicting the outcomes of the future of college tuitions, one might say it will either stay fixed at its necessary rate, or continue to increase steadily. In the three sources that have been chosen, “Years of cuts threaten to put College out of reach for more students,”A study in lowering tuition,” and “Public-College tuition rise is largest in 3 decades,” all questions asked will come into play and will conclude which aspects of benefit will resolve tuition costs. Most sources show statistical analysis to further display the evidence it provides and brings into further discussion. At the same time, because recession had brought up the results, there is no way of knowing which direction the cost of education will go. The determination factor will be decided when a solution is suggested in helping out needy families and further increasing federal grants that provide more benefits and actually makes a difference.
