Tides Gravity is a major force that creates tides. Tides are one of the most reliable phenomena in the world. As the sun rises in the east and the stars come out at night, we are confident that the ocean waters will regularly rise and fall along our shores. Tides Basically, tides are very long-period waves that move through the oceans in response to the forces exerted by the moon and sun. Tides originate in the oceans and progress toward the coastlines where they appear as the regular rise and fall of the sea surface.

Light Years What is a light-year and how is it used? A light-year is a unit of distance. It is the distance that light can travel in one year. Light moves at a velocity of about 300,000 kilometers (km) each second. So in one year, it can travel about 10 trillion km. In our solar system, we tend to describe distances in terms of the Astronomical Unit (AU). The AU, however, is not big enough of a unit when we start talking about distances to objects outside our solar system.

Light Years con’t Why would you want such a big unit of distance? In the universe, the kilometer is just too small to be useful. The Milky Way Galaxy is about 150,000 light-years across.
