Mysteries of God
Shepherds & Servants
Not War “To succeed, you must have the power to take what is needed. Peace is only a time for preparation for war.” Ephesians 4:1-7 v. 1, Christ over self. v. 2, Humility over ambition. v. 3, Peace over division. v. 4-6, One in all things.
Not Taken “Power is always taken, never given.” Ephesians 4:8, 11 Christ is the conqueror, not us. Leadership is a gift, not a conquest. Leadership comes from Christ, not from self.
Not Self Interest “Power seeks its own interest over that of others.” Ephesians 4:11 First look at their titles … Apostles … one sent by someone else Prophets … one who speaks for someone else Evangelists … one who announces someone else’s good news Shepherds … one who looks after others (in this case they don’t even own the sheep, 1 Peter 5)
Not Self Interest Second, look at their assigned task … v. 12, To equip others to work, to build up v. 13, To bring “all” to unity, knowledge, and maturity v. 14, To protect and nurture others
Not Fear “To keep power, it is better to be loved than feared.” Ephesians 4:15-16 Fear is the tool of the devil. Love casts out fear. Love is the method and love is the goal.
Shepherds & Servants Our shepherds reenact the gospel. They exert power through service. They lead by obedience. They gain glory through humility. Philippians 2:1-11
