Safety First Science is a hands-on laboratory class. You will be doing many laboratory activities, which require the use of hazardous chemicals and expensive lab equipment. Safety in the science classroom is the #1 priority. To ensure a safe science classroom, a list of rules has been developed and provided to you in your student safety contract. These rules must be followed at all times. A signed lab safety contract is required to participate in labs.

Use Your Head Exercise Caution and Good Judgment Follow all instructions given by the teacher Notify the teacher immediately regarding any accident or unsafe areas

General Safety Guidelines THE MOST IMPORTANT RULES: THINK before you ACT!!! Be Responsible at ALL Times. NO horseplay, practical jokes, pranks, etc. ALWAYS follow teacher directions, written & verbal!! Keep aisles clear, wash equipment, put notebooks in desks, etc. Lab Safety: Everyone Is Responsible!

Safety First CONSEQUENCES for VIOLATIONS 1ST offense: Verbal warning, may be removed from class & given an alternate assignment. Student may receive a ‘step’. 2nd offense: Student copies rules and parent & student sign agreement that rules will be followed. Student may be removed from class & given an alternate assignment. Student may receive a ‘step’ 3rd offense: Administrative referral. NOTE: A SEVERE infraction (even a 1st offense) will immediately result in an administrative referral.

General Safety Guidelines ● Always wear appropriate safety equipment required by the lab activity. ● Be careful with sharp object & glass. Only the teacher should clean up broken glass. ● Food, drink, & gum are NOT allowed in the science classroom. Do NOT put anything in mouth unless instructed by teacher. ● Follow proper handling of plants & animals. ● Keep hands away from eyes when using iron filings. Verbal & written directions. If you don’t understand ask for help. Do not do any experiments without teacher approval. Lab Safety: Everyone Is Responsible!

General Safety Guidelines ● Keep workplace neat, clean up when done. ● Tell the teacher about accidents or spills, or any unsafe condition IMMEDIATELY !! ● Use caution when working with heat sources, heated objects, & electricity. ● Wash hands after every activity. Verbal & written directions. If you don’t understand ask for help. Do not do any experiments without teacher approval. Lab Safety: Everyone Is Responsible!

What’s Wrong With This Picture?

What’s Wrong With These Statements? Hal says that his teacher is solely responsible for preventing laboratory accidents. Keshia started the lab activity before reading it through completely. Ricardo decided to do a lab activity that he read about in a library book before the teacher came into the classroom. Stephanie says that the safety goggles mess up her hair and give her raccoon eyes. She refuses to wear them. Barbie and Ken accidentally break a beaker full of some chemical. Instead of risking getting in trouble they quickly clean up the mess with paper towel and throw it in the garbage.

What To Do In An Emergency If there is a fire or fire alarm Quietly get up and push in your chair. Follow our exit procedure to Gathering #3 Remain in line until the drill is over. Remain silent throughout the entire alarm so that all people can hear important directions. Return to the classroom when instructed. Lab Safety: Everyone Is Responsible!

Any Questions? REMEMBER: Carefully read through the entire safety contract and sign. Have your parents read and sign your safety contract and return it to school. Study for the safety quiz on Friday, 8/29!
