History of ballet Started Italian Renaissance Courts during the 15th Century In 1661 a dance academy for ballet was opened by King Louis XIV of France Ballet moved from the courts to the stage in 1681 The French Opera included elements of ballet which created the tradition of opera-ballet in France. Emma Fury

New forms of ballet In the mid-1700s a ballet master by the name of Jean Georges Noverre rebelled against the art skill of ballet in operas and claimed that ballet could stand on its own He introduced ballet d’action which was a dramatic form of ballet that conveyed a story. His work is considered a precursor to narrative ballets in the 19th Century. Emma Fury

The Romantic Movement During the time of the Romantic Movement (1800-1850) a ballerina by the name of Marie Camargo shortened the skirt of her to be just above her ankles. Along with this shocking change came the use of the pointe shoe. Romantic Ballets were brought about during this time and the length of the skirt changed one again. Ballerinas now wore a skirt that stopped mid-calf called a romantic tutu Emma Fury

Ballet in the 19th Century During the late 19th Century ballet was extremely popular and was taken to new heights by Russian choreographers and composers. These ballets focused on classical technique which included pointe work, high extensions, precision of movement, and turn-outs. These ballets told a story while also containing complicated sequences with demanding steps that were shown off with classical tutus. This new form of ballet became known as classical ballet and brought several famous performances such as The Nutcracker, The Sleeping Beauty, and Swan Lake with it. Emma Fury

Ballet in the 20th Century In the early 20th Century, two Russian choreographers named Sergei Diaghilev and Michel Fokine experimented with movement and costumes. Diaghilev collaborated with composer Igor Stravinsky to create The Right of Spring, different from any piece that had been created before. This story was so different that it caused the audience to riot. A new form of ballet was created by George Balanchine. It was called neoclassical ballet and expanded from classical ballet. Emma Fury

Characteristics of Performance Ballet consists of slow graceful movements with a song. In Ballet you must use long and straightened legs with pointed toes. Pointe shoes are usually worn by professional ballet dancers, this helps with the over extension of the foot and it creates the illusion of a pointed foot. Hair is usually up in a high bun to show a long neck. In ballet when you move around you must make soft and light steps with your feet. Ballet includes choreography that syncs up with music. Jamie Stocker
