Introduction Milkfish (Chanos chanos Forskal) Highly consume fish in Indonesia Cultured in shallow brackish water ponds
HEAVY METALS Naturally occurring element 3rd International Conference on Fisheries and Aquaculture Sri Lanka, 2016 HEAVY METALS Naturally occurring element Have relatively high density (5 g/cm3) Two different types: Essential: required to the metabolism of cells at low concentration Non-essential: the function is still not known and toxic at low concentration
3rd International Conference on Fisheries and Aquaculture Sri Lanka, 2016 METALS ACCUMULATION Organisms such as milkfish are exposed to heavy metals from the environment The accumulation pose a risk to human
Ujung Pangkah, Gresik, East Java 3rd International Conference on Fisheries and Aquaculture Sri Lanka, 2016 STUDY AREA Ujung Pangkah is one district in Gresik city with numbers of aquaculture areas It is because Ujung Pangkah has access to Bengawan Solo River as the source of aquaculture water system However, Bengawan Solo River is also subjected for pollution from the urban and industrial activities Ujung Pangkah, Gresik, East Java Map?
3rd International Conference on Fisheries and Aquaculture Sri Lanka, 2016 to evaluate heavy metals accumulation (Cu and Pb) in the water, sediment and the gills of milkfish (Chanos chanos) OBJECTIVE
The study was conducted in three different milkfish ponds 3rd International Conference on Fisheries and Aquaculture Sri Lanka, 2016 METHODOLOGY The study was conducted in three different milkfish ponds In each pond, three fish samples of similar size were taken for Cu and Pb analysis in the gills START 2 4 1 3 Water and sediment samples were collected for heavy metals (Cu and Pb) analysis Heavy metals were measured using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS)
FISH PONDS 3rd International Conference on Fisheries and Aquaculture Sri Lanka, 2016 FISH PONDS
RESULT AND DISCUSSION Station Temperature (°C) Salinity (psu) pH 3rd International Conference on Fisheries and Aquaculture Sri Lanka, 2016 RESULT AND DISCUSSION Water Quality Parameters Station Temperature (°C) Salinity (psu) pH DO (mg/l) Pond 1 36.00 0.67 7.60 4.75 Pond 2 35.00 9.00 7.70 4.77 Pond 3 34.00 11.00 7.80 5.20 Map? Water quality parameters were in the normal range for aquacultures Very low salinity especially in Pond 1 is related to the water source from the river
Cu concentration (ppm) Pb concentration (ppm) 3rd International Conference on Fisheries and Aquaculture Sri Lanka, 2016 HEAVY METAL CONCENTRATIONS Station Cu concentration (ppm) Pb concentration (ppm) Water Sediment Gills Pond 1 0.480 0.844 0.256 0.019 0.141 0.170 Pond 2 0.460 0.692 0.234 0.010 0.056 0.108 Pond 3 0.006 0.566 0.192 0.004 0.036 0.040 Map? Heavy metal concentrations were higher in the sediment compared to the one in the water Cu concentration was found higher than Pb concentration Higher accumulation of Cu compared to Pb in the gills of milkfish was related to higher concentration of Cu in the water and sediment
HEAVY METAL DISTRIBUTIONS IN THE WATER AND SEDIMENT 3rd International Conference on Fisheries and Aquaculture Sri Lanka, 2016 HEAVY METAL DISTRIBUTIONS IN THE WATER AND SEDIMENT Map?
HEAVY METAL DISTRIBUTIONS IN THE GILLS OF MILKFISH 3rd International Conference on Fisheries and Aquaculture Sri Lanka, 2016 HEAVY METAL DISTRIBUTIONS IN THE GILLS OF MILKFISH Map?
3rd International Conference on Fisheries and Aquaculture Sri Lanka, 2016 High concentrations of heavy metals in the study area were highly influenced by the river In general, heavy metal concentrations were found higher in the pond close to the river (Pond 1) The results of this study show that heavy metal concentrations in the water were above the permissible limit for Cu but still below the permissible limit for Pb set by the Indonesian Government Law of Water Quality (2001) On the other hand, both Cu and Pb concentrations in the gills of milkfish were still below the permissible limit for toxic metals set by the Indonesian National Standard (SNI 2009) Map?
