Tracing the evolution of literature through time Literary Movements Tracing the evolution of literature through time

What is a Lit Movement? a collection of authors and their writings that reflect common views and styles which are influenced by the time period and related events

How Is a Lit Movement Formed? Scholars often group works from a certain timeframe together and label it as a period or movement Sometimes, the authors themselves defined their movement In some cases a single author can even be claimed by more than one movement. Lit movements are not mutually exclusive; they often overlap

As We Explore Lit Movements… We will address the same defining factors for each: Historical Context Styles Philosophies

What Lit Movements Are We Currently Experiencing?

Contemporary 1970s - on Concerned with relationships and connections between people Emotion-provoking storytelling is common Authors include: Tim O’brien, Sherman Alexie, John Grisham, Tom Clancy, Barbara Kingsolver, Maya Angelou and Michael Crichton

Pluralism – late 20th century Realization that literature does not only need to come from dead white guys The idea of diversity and acceptance drives this movement Authors address universal themes seen through the eyes of their culture Authors include: Amy Tan, Alice Walker, Sandra Cisneros

Magical Realism – late 20th century A juxtaposition of the ordinary with magical elements Fantastic elements are interwoven into realistic fiction Authors include Toni Morrison, Alice Sebold, Ally Condie, Suzanne Collins,, Neil Gaiman Yes, if J.K. Rowling were American, Harry Potter would fit into this movement as well

Personal Literary Movement In order to grasp a literary movement, and to get to know you better, I want you to complete the Personal Literary Movement template. Imagine that your life is a literary movement. The events and environment of your time period shape your philosophies. Indicate how those work together on the handout. Due Thursday
