Pecha Kucha – Illustration Illustration is defined by it’s context and not by it’s medium, and is therefor a unique art form. It has a rich history and is still modern and contemporary. Illustration brings to life concepts and stories through it’s image-making. It can be created digitally or traditionally by hand. Illustrations can be works of art and a practical business presentation.

Takahiro Suganuma たかひろすがぬま “There are many people drawing excellent landscape illustrations in Japan. I particularly like the illustrations that have emptiness and a quiet atmosphere. My aim is to fuse the typical Japanese quiet feeling with other world illustration themes.” 冊子表紙『まなびガイド』(ベネッセコーポレーション) Takahiro Suganuma たかひろすがぬま Cover illustration for Manabi guide by Benesse Corporation. Roy Lichtenstein He was born on October 27th 1923 Roy Lichtenstein was an American pop artist He became a leading figure in the new art movement He worked with Andy Warhol and Jasper Johns, and James Rosenquist Comic strips were his main inspiration He evolved from cubism and expressionism to abstract expressionism He was interested by the look of comic book art because of its sharp black outlines.

Roy Lichtenstein ‘Girl With Hair Ribbon’ He liked painting close-ups of women. He painted the women looking out towards the viewer with an expression of longing, pensiveness or fear. We the viewers are left with a tiny fragment of a story.

Roy Lichtenstein Wham! ‘Wham!’ is a 1963 2 piece work Its one of the best known works of pop art and Roy Liechtenstein's most important paintings The left hand panel shows a fighter plane firing a rocket that, in the right hand panel, hits a second plane which explodes in to flames

Roy Lichtenstein This piece of work is from the comic series ‘Secret Love’ #83 from 1962. In the original illustration, the drowning girl’s boyfriend appears in the background, clinging to the capsized boat. Lichtenstein cropped the image, only showing the girl alone, encircled by a threatening wave. He shortened the caption from “I don’t care if I have a cramp!” to the ambiguous “I don’t care!” and changed the boyfriend’s name she calls out from Mal to Brad

Quentin Blake He was born on December 16th 1932 Sir Quentin Blake is an English cartoonist, illustrator and children’s writer He is best known for illustrating books written by Roald Dahl For his illustrations he uses water colours and then sketches over them with a black fine liner

Quentin Blake He is mostly famous for his illustrations in Roald Dahl books. He used watercolour for his work. His most iconic illustrations were ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’, ‘The Twits’ and ‘Matilda’. His illustrations for the book have been treasured through the ages. My favourite illustrations were from ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ because I liked how you could see his imagination on the page and how colourful they looked.

Quentin Blake Quentin’s first cartoon was published in the ‘Punch’ magazine in 1949. During the 1950s and 1960s, he regularly contributed colour artwork for magazine covers In the regular columns such as ‘City and Country’ and ‘Criticism’ he would add his own cartoons and jokes.

Quentin Blake He has recently done illustrations for David Walliams's books. Just like Roald Dahls books, he has illustrated new vibrant characters for the new generations but still paints in his signature style.

Alice Zhang Alicexz is an artist that mainly uses digital media and is mostly known online. She was born in November, 1988. Her full name is Alice X Zhang. She is a full-time freelance designer, illustrator, and portrait artist from America. She attended Rhode Island school of design, studying B.F.A, Graphic Design between 2006 and 2010. She uses a Wacom Cintiq 21UX and occasionally Wacom Bamboo to draw and she uses Photoshop CS5. Many of her Doctor Who and Sherlock artwork have been licenced by the BBC and are being sold as official print in the BBC shops. It’s part of the artists’ official Doctor Who poster series and it was commissioned by Big Chief Studios.

Alice Zhang “Turn of the Universe” This first piece is of the tenth doctor who is played by David Tennant and it goes along the theme of wonder and that there are 3 other companion pieces of work featuring the other three doctors at the time. The artist says that it took many hours (and tears) and countless references. “Turn of the Universe”

Alice Zhang “A study in pink.” The second piece is portrait of BBC Sherlock as played by Benedict Cumberbatch. It was just a simple portrait that she painted one night on a whim and that was later licensed by the BBC as an official Sherlock print. “A study in pink.”

Alice Zhang “Carry on my wayward son.” The third piece is her part of the Bottleneck Gallery's "The Gang is All Here" - a show focusing on famous groups and friendships in pop culture. She selected was ‘team free will’ from the show Supernatural – Dean, Sam, and Castiel. “Carry on my wayward son.”
