WP4: High-Energy Neutrinos ASPERA Workshop, Valencia 08.11.2006 WP4: High-Energy Neutrinos Projects WP Organisation Towards ApPEC Roadmap/ Phase 1 Beyond Phase 1 Uli Katz Univ. Erlangen

The Projects Neutrino telescopes Other Approaches (mostly UHE) South Pole: AMANDA/IceCube Mediterranean: ANTARES,NEMO,NESTOR + KM3NeT … and also: Baikal Other Approaches (mostly UHE) Radio: IceCube, Auger, LOFAR, ANITA, … Acoustic: R&D projects EUSO UHE methods overlap with cosmic ray experiments  suggest to combine WP3 (CR)+WP4(n) 08.11.2006 U. Katz: WP4

WP4 Organisation Major questions: For today & next meeting: What is the mandate of the Working Groups? What is their expected life time? What are they supposed to deliver beyond “phase 1”? How is membership organised? Through appointment by national funding agencies? Matrix “themes” vs. “nations”? Is there a bottom-up component? Role of ApPEC PRC? For today & next meeting: U.K. convenes meeting Additional members to be approached (IceCube, radio) Thereafter … (S)Election of chair person, candidatures & decision depend on answers on above questions and on WP3+WP4 status. 08.11.2006 U. Katz: WP4

Immediate Action Set up organisational structure mailing list, some extent of coordination, actions and deadlines,… agree on immediate task: review and modify the corresponding section of the ApPEC Roadmap draft. Collect comments on Roadmap draft several issues have been discussed, agreement that modifications are desirable; collection of suggestions and arguments by email to U.K, deadline: 30.11.06; suggested modifications will be given to ApPEC PRC; goal: implementation in ApPEC Roadmap & “phase 1“; WP3/W4 coordination: yet to be defined. 08.11.2006 U. Katz: WP4

Thoughts about the Roadmap Who is the target reader? It is a big difference whether we address an astroparticle scientist, a “general natural scientist” or a politician; current document directed to rather wide audience. Widening the Roadmap acceptance by adding an “expert level version” (e.g. web page)? by adding expert-type appendices? Professional editing support including features like explanation boxes, examples, etc. at a professional editing level might be worth while to consider; could the resources come from ASPERA? Develop to textbook ?! 08.11.2006 U. Katz: WP4

Beyond Phase 1 Industry Global aspects Time lines take stock of existing and foreseen cooperations description possibly needs extra chapter (not organised along the working group/roadmap themes) question: Phase 0, 1, 2 or 3? Global aspects balancing of EU/US/Japan activities mention invitation for beyond-EU participations? Time lines what information is needed when? by what deadlines will projects/WGs have to deliver what? … 08.11.2006 U. Katz: WP4
