Skills building 2: Note taking How do you make notes while doing listening exercises?

Skills of making notes Use abbreviations(缩写词) and contractions(缩略词) An abbreviation is a shortened form of a word or phrase used chiefly in writing to represent the complete form. Sometimes a dot is used at the end of the abbreviation.

e.g. WTO=World Trade Organization UN=United Nations Nov=November Sat=Saturday PRC=People's Republic of China Dept=department e.g.=for example SH1=Senior High 1

e.g. won't=will not I'd=I would / I had he's=he is / he has A contraction (缩略词)is a word formed by omitting or combining some of the sounds of a longer phrase. e.g. won't=will not I'd=I would / I had he's=he is / he has

2. write down only the key words e.g. It is more important to have enough energy to finish the race, rather than to run very fast. →More important to have energy to finish race than run fast

3. Use symbols ﹥ ﹤ ↑ ↓ ∵ ∴ + = bigger/more than smaller/less than increase/better decrease/worse because therefore plus equal

e.g. The usual training is swimming, bike riding and running, four times a week. →usual training=(swimming + bike riding + running) × 4/ wk

Step 2: interviewing a person about exercise and training

Marathon

Listen to an interview about Lucy’s training programme and complete the notes below. Please use the abbreviations and contractions.

4.5hrs. (2) 10 miles × 1 day/wk (3) Mon (4) 62
