There are many kinds of maps! Claudia Mesnil-Baez Social Studies Lesson grade 2 & 3

Continents Continents are main expanses of land They are made up of countries

Earth / Globe terms Ocean: The oceans are the larger bodies of water that surround the lands of the world. Sea: A sea is usually a smaller and more defined area of water. There are seas next to oceans of water.

Earth/Globe terms Equator: an imaginary line drawn around the earth equally distant from both poles, dividing the earth into northern and southern hemispheres and constituting the parallel of latitude 0°.

Countries Countries have their own governments, economies, and cultures. There are countries within continents and cities within countries. Our country is the United States of America, our continent is North America, and our state is Alabama. There are several cities in Alabama: Montgomery Birmingham Mobile Huntsville

Physical maps A visual representation of an area that shows geography, topography, and others.

Political Maps Political maps are designed to show governmental boundaries of countries, states and counties. They can also indicate the location of major cities, and they usually include significant bodies of water.

Latitude & Longitude Latitude: the angular distance of a place north or south of the earth's equator, or of a celestial object north or south of the celestial equator, usually expressed in degrees and minutes. Longitude: the angular distance of a place east or west of the meridian at Greenwich, England, or west of the standard meridian of a celestial object, usually expressed in degrees and minutes.
