So much information that everyone needs to know... Each sessions lead to conduct: Ice Breaker Objectives of Sessions Then progress into the following slides before covering role specific content
What does everyone need to know? Slide Title You need to know about Club Culture Position of Responsibility Representing Members Policies & Procedures Sports Club Constitution Registration & Membership Process Using the Students' Union Website Before we start looking at what you need to know and do as a [insert role title] there is some information which is relevant to the committee as a whole. This includes: Club Culture Responsibilty Representation Policies & Procedures Sports Club Constitution Registration & membership Students Union website
Club Culture First up is Club Culture
Rate you club culture... Slide Title Definition of culture The attitudes and behaviour characteristic of a particular social group Complete the slip stating your score and why you believe this is an accurate account of the culture within your club. Negative Positive There are many definitions when it comes to the word Culture but for the purpose of today we're going to focus on this one: The attitudes and behaviour characteristic of a particular social group. Very quickly I want you to think about the culture within your club and rate it on a scale of 1 to 10 - 1 being a negative club culture and 10 being a positive club culture. Then write down what specifically makes it either a negative or positive culture.
An ideal club culture... Slide Title FUN SOCIAL PERFORMANCE DRIVEN WELCOMING ENJOYABLE INCLUSIVE Compare what they mentioned to what is included in this slide. Clubs need to ensure that they are working towards all of these. FRIENDLY OPEN TO CHANGE CHALLENGING DIVERSE
Responsibility Next up is responsibility
As a committee member you hold a position of responsibility. You are responsible... Slide Title As a committee member you hold a position of responsibility. This means that if there is a disciplinary within your club, responsibility could fall on you, even if you weren't involved. Consequences could be that you are stripped of your role and restricted from being on any committee in the future. You could also have to face Students' Union and University Disciplinary procedures. As a committee member you hold a position of responsibility. Essentially this means that collectively you are the face of the club and ultimately responsibility (could) fall on you if the club was to be involved in a disciplinary. Even if you weren't involved! You may be stripped of your role and prohibited from being on a committee in the future. You could also be passed over the University and go through their disciplinary procedures. This is a worst case scenario and we hope nothing ever come to this but you need to be aware. You could make the comparison to a normal employment if that helps to explain.
Represent Next is Represent
Represent your members... Slide Title The committee exists to represent club members What would you do in the following situations... The club committee is discussing the option of buying a large piece of equipment from the clubs account and can't come to an agreement Club members are unhappy with the time of one of their training sessions Club members want their Sports Ball tickets subsidising by club funding The committee exists to represent the members of the club - much like when a politician is elected! **Ask them to shout out what they think this means. **Answer - Listening to the needs of your members and acting upon what they have said by speaking to the SPAO or a member of SU staff to create change. Ask them what they would do in the following scenarios based on what representing means. There are no right of wrong answers we just want them to get used to the process of either asking their members for their opinion and making decisions based on that or taking members opinions and trying to act upon it.
Policies & Procedures So whilst you maintaining or developing your club culture, being responsible for your club and representing your members you have to be mindful of the policies and procedures that the SU have. We understand that this is a lot to ask but we know you are more than capable of doing it.
There have been a lot of changes... Slide Title You have to do everything we have covered whilst operating within the Students' Unions policies and procedures. Some Policies and Procedures will be covered in more detail shortly but I would strongly recommend that you familiarise yourself with all of them. They can be viewed on the Students' Union Website. We're not going to go through them all now. The majority will be covered in different role sessions but we would strongly recommend that you familiarise yourself with them all. They are available to view of the SU website on the Sports Club resources page.
Sports Club Constitution Next...Anybody know what a constitution is? **Answer - A document which includes principles and/or points in which an organisation has to be governed by. Essentially details how clubs need to operate in order to be classed as an SU Sports Club.
Your club constitution... Slide Title It includes details about: Purpose Membership Committee Meetings Roles Finance Winding Up You will all have to sign the constitution to show that you agree on and understand how your club should operate It includes information regarding (just give a few examples): Membership - who can be a member of your club? Information about associate members? The minimum number of members that you have. Meetings - Annual General meeting and Emergency General meeting We'll be sending this to you at a later date so keep your eyes peeled. .
