Presentation transcript:

Heat Transfer What is heat transfer? How is heat transferred?

What is Heat Transfer? Heat energy moving from something hot to something cold. Examples: Putting ice in a warm Coke to get the Coke colder. Using a grill to cook food. Blowing on a hot french fry to cool it down.

What isn’t Heat Transfer? Exothermic and endothermic chemical reactions. Friction These are examples of how heat it made, not how heat is transferred.

Why does Heat Transfer? Objects prefer to have the same temperature. They want to be equal. So something hot gives some of it’s heat energy to something cold so that they can both be more equal.

How is heat transferred? 3 ways of heat transfer Conduction Convection Radiation

Conduction Conduction is when heat transfers from one object to another object, and the objects are touching.

Convection Convection is when heat transfers from one object by moving either air or liquid across it.

Radiation Radiation is when heat transfers from one object to another by being placed near it.

Homework On your own paper, give 3 examples each of conduction, convection, and radiation.
