? Pyramids: Why pyramids? ________________________________________________________ Why pyramids? To find out, we’re going to start today’s class with an epic task. Use only the materials provided to build the largest structure you can - (as a monument to your own greatness!) ?

Pyramids: What a mess! Why pyramids? + = ________________________________________________________ Why pyramids? Egyptian pyramids are made of stacked blocks – and nothing else. No mortar, no cement, no nothing! Imagine stacking a bunch of soda cans on top of each other with nothing holding them together… What a mess! + =

! Pyramids: Pyramids just make sense! Why pyramids? + = ________________________________________________________ Why pyramids? ! Now imagine giving that stack of cans a wide, sturdy base… + = When you’ve got nothing to hold stuff together… Pyramids just make sense!

Cornell Notes: Notes/definitions go on the right side ________________________________________________________ Notes/definitions go on the right side Keywords go on the left side

Key Points: What were the pyramids FOR? = ________________________________________________________ What were the pyramids FOR? Egyptian pyramids are tombs for dead Pharaohs Though they may have also served astronomical purposes, they’re basically enormous headstones =

Key Points: What’s on the inside? ________________________________________________________ What’s on the inside? Not much! Khufu’s pyramid – the largest one at Giza (481 feet tall) – is a “spacious” two rooms Why so cramped? In order to support the enormous weight of the stones, the pyramids had to be mostly solid The floorplan… The entrance…

Key Points: The floorplan… ________________________________________________________ The floorplan…

Just for a frame of reference: Sooooo… that’s a whole lot of that. Key Points: ________________________________________________________ What are they made out of? Huge blocks of stone quarried (cut) out of the ground hundreds of miles away from the building site Khufu’s pyramid (the Great Pyramid) consists of 2.5 million blocks – each averaging over 2.5 tons (Some weigh as much as 150 tons!!!) Just for a frame of reference: 150 tons = 300,000 pounds! Sooooo… that’s a whole lot of that.

X SORRY! Key Points: NOT by aliens. How were they built? ________________________________________________________ X How were they built? NOT by aliens. SORRY!

Key Points: How would YOU do it? Rocks Slaves If not aliens, then how? ________________________________________________________ If not aliens, then how? Let’s pause from our notetaking for a moment and seriously consider the task at hand… Your materials: Your goal: Rocks Slaves To build a 481 foot tall pyramid that covers half a million square feet using 2.5 million stone blocks each weighing at least 5000 lbs How would YOU do it?

Key Points: How were they built? Here’s the fun part… WE HAVE NO IDEA ________________________________________________________ How were they built? Here’s the fun part… WE HAVE NO IDEA However, we do have theories – and the most popular ones all involve ramps

Key Points: Ramp theories: The straight-on ramp ________________________________________________________ Ramp theories: The straight-on ramp Problem: actually requires more materials to make the ramp than the pyramid!

Key Points: Ramp theories: The zig-zag ramp ________________________________________________________ Ramp theories: The zig-zag ramp Problem: pretty tough to maneuver massive stone blocks around tight corners

Key Points: Ramp theories: The internal ramp ________________________________________________________ Ramp theories: The internal ramp Problem: difficult to build the chambers inside with a ramp running through the middle of them

Key Points: Ramp theories: The spiral ramp ________________________________________________________ Ramp theories: The spiral ramp The theory favored by most Egyptologists because it uses the least additional materials of any of the current ramp theories

REMEMBER ME! REMEMBER ME! Key Points: ________________________________________________________ Just for fun… Enjoy this clip from Futurama’s A Pharaoh to Remember. REMEMBER ME! REMEMBER ME!
