Outline Work package General layout and functionality Schedule Mixer unit Gas Distribution unit Schedule Cost estimate Questions summary Conclusions 31/1/2006 TOTEM Engeneering Design Review S.Haider PH/DT1

Gas system work package 2 gas systems: CSC (T1) and GEM (T2) 2 mixer units (not for 07 startup) 4 UX distribution units Each endcap 1 rack with 2 distribution units for T1 and T2 2 control racks: 1 in SG and 1 in US for T1 and T2 In SG, each system will have it’s own PLC control User interface in PVSS 31/1/2006 TOTEM Engeneering Design Review S.Haider PH/DT1

General parameters Q1: can we run from the CMS CSC mixer? Limit of GEM’s (T2) CSC (T1) Gas: Ar/CO2 70/30 Ar/CO2 (CF4 optional) 50/50 (40/50/10) Total volume: ~40 litres 400 litres Total flow: 50-100 l/h 70-200 l/h Chamber pressure 1 mbar 1 to 3 mbar Max. overpressure < 10 mbar < 20 mbar No. of Channels 10 channels/endcap 10 channels per endcap No. of Chambers 20 30 No. of Distribution Racks 1 per endcap Limit of Accuracy! 31/1/2006 TOTEM Engeneering Design Review S.Haider PH/DT1

Schematic overview of the gas systems Q2: Are these pipes in the Contract of Criotec ? Q3: do these pipes arrive at the correct place ? 31/1/2006 TOTEM Engeneering Design Review S.Haider PH/DT1

Pipe connections for T1 and T2 UX distribution rack (one endcap): To / from T2 T1 To / from T1 US UX US-UX supply / return Q4: are there flexibles in the supply lines? Q5: Return to US not used for now ? Q6: CO2 backup line comes from where? Q7: Are analysis lines really unused? CO2 line for backup Analysis lines 31/1/2006 TOTEM Engeneering Design Review S.Haider PH/DT1

T2 T1 T2 T1 Top view: CMS Interaction Point flexibles Gas pipes from distribution rack to chambers Q8: planned for when ? Q9: who is doing it ? Q10: what are the distances for each line? Q11: has T1 UX rack to chambers pipes in Rilsan been confirmed by SC ? T2 CMS Interaction Point T1 T2 T1 flexibles UX distribution Rack for T1 and T2 On T2 platform, supplied through central cable chain underneath CMS 31/1/2006 TOTEM Engeneering Design Review S.Haider PH/DT1

Questions (1/2) Q1: for T1, can we take gas from the CMS CSC mixer? (in case the same gas mixture is used) Pipes from US to UX Q2: are these pipes in the contract of Criotec? Q3: do they end at the correct places? Q4: are there flexibles in the supply lines? Q5: Return to US not used for now ? Q6: CO2 backup line comes from where? Questions (2/2) Gas pipes from distribution rack to chambers Q8: planned for when ? Q9: who is doing it ? Q10: what are the distances for each line? Q11: has T1 UX rack to chambers pipe in Rilsan been confirmed by SC ? Q12: there are no hardware input protection bubblers foreseen? 31/1/2006 TOTEM Engeneering Design Review S.Haider PH/DT1

Conclusions The Totem UX distribution racks are well established in our production line. Mixers will come later. Construction of UX racks will start beginning February 31/1/2006 TOTEM Engeneering Design Review S.Haider PH/DT1
