My history My great-great-great-great-great-great-grandparents left Germany in the year 1719 and came to America so that they could practice their religion freely. They settled in Pennsylvania, became prosperous farmers, and had ten (!) children, but only four of them, the sons, lived to adulthood. The three younger sons left Pennsylvania and settled in North Carolina, where the Moravian Church (their religion) had established a colonial settlement.

My culture In my family, we are members of the Moravian Church, the same church my ancestors left Germany for. My ancestors spoke German, but now we speak English. Today we live in the United States, and my clothes are typically American – jeans, T-shirts, skirts, blouses.

We celebrate the religious holidays of Easter and Christmas, and Independence Day and Thanksgiving Day are national holidays we like to celebrate. We enjoy all the modern ways of travel: the automobile, Uber!, airplanes, and trains.

My economics When I was young, I didn’t get an allowance, but my parents sometimes gave me a little spending money if the occasion called for it. I earned a lot of money babysitting, housecleaning, and working in the neighbors’ gardens. I liked to save my money until I had enough to buy something really nice for myself – I didn’t like to spend my money on things that wouldn’t last. I liked to shop at the big new shopping mall in the nearby city – I had never seen so many beautiful stores!
