The story in the poem involves the son recollection of his father’s phone call and the peevish complaints he makes about his life (his wife and, therefore, the son’s mother is dead). Extension: What are the father and son separated by? Tony Harrison, the author, was born in Leeds. He was from a working class background but went to grammar school and university.
