Overlighting of stairwells in change outs of existing light fixtures TOOL WORKSHOP Trade offs between thermal comfort and acoustical privacy in naturally ventilated offices Overlighting of stairwells in change outs of existing light fixtures

Natural Ventilation H1: There is a measurable difference in air speeds in offices that have both their clerestorys and window open v.s. those that only have the window open.

Acoustical Privacy H2: There is a measurable difference in noise level between when the office has all openings closed and when the window is open, the door is open and the clerestory is open or a combination thereof.

Methodology Tools Hot wire anemometer for airspeed Sound level meter Sample Spaces One east facing office (leeward side) One west facing office (windward side)

Methodology Measurements were taken at occupant seating position in two offices on the third floor of the Faculty Offices East. Measurements were taken with the Hot wire anemometer (FPM) and the sound level meter (db) For noise, we had a team member stand outside the office and talk at a reasonable talking volume

Methodology Measurements were taken under 4 conditions: All windows and door closed Window open Window and clerestory open Window and door open Window, clerestory, and door open

Data

Conclusions H1 was correct. There was a measurable difference in airflow with differing apertures open H2 Was partially correct. The noise level increased when the clerestory and or door were open. There was no change in noise level when the outside window was opened. Clerestories were poorly functioning, fire doors were left open to compensate for air flow. Solve with better air flow in hallway.

Stairwell Lighting H1: The light levels in the stairwells are over the light levels required by code

Methodology Tools Illuminance Meter used to take footcandle readings at stair treads Sample Spaces One east facing stairwell (with exterior windows) One west facing stairwell

Data

Conclusion H1 was correct. The level of footcandles required for stairwells by code is 2. The levels detected by our team far exceeded that level.
