Measuring the Wind Lesson Lesson Synopsis Working in teams, the students design and build their own anemometers out of everyday items. Learning Objectives Learn about anemometers. Learn about engineering design. Learn how engineering can help solve society's challenges. Learn about teamwork and problem solving

Challenge We will build an anemometer using simple materials The top portion must be able to freely move without resistance to spin or turn quickly. It may be helpful to make one of the cups or wind catchers a different color than the others for easier counting of revolutions.

Materials Aluminum foil Binder clips Drinking straws Paper bowl/cup Paperclips Plastic spoons Rubberbands Toothpicks Wire Wood craft sticks Wood dowels

Outline and Procedures Divide into teams of two participants. Review the requirements Discuss a solution and create a sketch of your design Build a model of your design with given materials Test your model Redesign and retest Answer reflection questions Material bags for teams to build…

Reflection Did you succeed in creating a anemometer that measured the three different "wind“ speeds? If not, why did it fail? How did working as a team help in the design process? What did you learn from the designs developed by other teams? How could this activity be used in the classroom?
