What is Biology? The word “Biology” word coined by Karl Friedrich Burdach in 1800, and by Jean-Baptiste Lamarck in 1802. Biology is derived from a Greek word: “Bios” meaning “Life” and Logia meaning “to study”. Biology is a natural science concerned with the study of life and living organisms. Fundamental basis of modern biology include: 1. Cells as the basic unit of life. 2. New species and inherited traits are the product of evolution. 3. Genes are the basic units of heredity. 4. An organism will regulate its internal environment to maintain a stable and constant condition. 5. Living organisms consume and transform energy.
