“PARALLEL PRESENTATION” DUAL-SCREEN LECTURE FORMAT COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES: GREATEST BENEFITS OFTHE IMPACT PROGRAM: COURSE CODE: ECE 36200 COURSE TITLE: Microprocessor Systems and Interfacing NAME OF INSTRUCTOR: David G. Meyer Provides an opportunity to approach course transformation from a scholarly perspective Provides an opportunity to contribute to the “knowledge base” of effective course transformations Provides an opportunity to interact in a multidisciplinary way with colleagues across campus An ability to program a microcontroller to perform various tasks An ability to interface a microcontroller to various devices An ability to effectively utilize microcontroller peripherals An ability to design and implement a microcontroller-based embedded system WHY ARE YOU TRANSFORMING YOUR COURSE? WHAT HAVE YOU ACCOMPLISHED IN THIS TRANSFORMATION TO DATE? Created detailed set of learning objectives for each outcome based on Bloom’s taxonomy Developed “parallel presentation” (dual-screen) format featuring Lecture Summary notes used in conjunction with PPT slides Initiated Honors Contract section that introduces students to printed circuit board (PCB) design as part of Mini-Project Revised learning outcome assessment strategies Captured and archived lectures using BoilerCast Developed new set of laboratory experiments Expanded use of iClickers ECE 362 is a pivotal course in the Computer Engineering curriculum Virtually all modern “intelligent” devices utilize microcontrollers, so knowledge of how they work and how to use them is essential for virtually all system-related design work Many students struggle with programming – this includes learning how to effectively create embedded applications using procedural languages as well as design microcontroller interface hardware (“glue logic”) using hardware description languages – there are numerous opportunities to improve how we help students learn these concepts PRE-IMPACT ENROLLMENT AND GPA HISTORY “PARALLEL PRESENTATION” DUAL-SCREEN LECTURE FORMAT SCREEN 1 PPT SLIDES SCREEN 2 Lecture Summary Notes PRE-IMPACT OUTCOME DEMONSTRATION STUDENT COMMENTS “After this course you feel like you can ACTUALLY do something.” “The feeling after a finished lab is awesome.” “Very intuitive course.” “My biggest gripe is the amount of time the labs take, but in hindsight I really learned a lot.” “Course outcomes and grades were very clearly given. No grade ambiguity, which is a breath of fresh air.” “This is my favorite class I’ve taken at Purdue. It’s extremely well organized and well thought out. The labs are interesting but challenging. The tests were good as well.” “Loved the Mini-Project.” “[Meyer] tries very hard to help people pass this difficult course.” “Prof. Meyer really knows his [stuff] and seems to love teaching the content, which is rare.” WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACCOMPLISH IN THE NEAR FUTURE? Create a new modular on-line lecture series using Mediasite (rich media capture) Expand Honors Contract into separate lecture division that would be offered in a “flipped” (hybrid or directed problem solving) format in a studio/lab environment Update equipment and facilities – expand “hands on” prototyping and development capabilities
