Starter Session Quote of the day “A game designer can be anyone influencing the game design, and this means many people with different skills and backgrounds may be the designers of the final game”.

Level III Gaming Blends Theory and Practice. Lectures, Labs/workshops, and doing are tightly interconnected Learning Programming Learning Design and 3d Modelling Learning Sound Communication and teamwork – Essential No exam only hard work and project set by you Project based learning encourages you to become independent learners And helps you understand the industry Creative thinking and problem solving are paramount for success You could build your business out of this class if you want

Units Level III Gaming Research Game Planning Game Development Programming 3d Engine (Unreal/Unity/Blender) 3d Modelling Environment Modelling Sound for games Animation Design (Photoshop for packaging, game concept and visualization)

To Create a Game: A narrative/story A storyboard A game treatment Sketches Design skills (2d and 3d) Programming And passion

When creating a new game You are building an imaginary universe for players to immerse in Like a universe you live in you must consider: The environment (planet, country, weather) The main objects/inhabitants (river s, trees, buildings, ethnic population, history, origins) The tools used to travel, survive What can be destroyed, build The routines Now that the basics are set The story unfolds The camera rolls Music is created each each room, environment The levels, hooks and rules are set

Never create a game without the gamer in your mind Age Habits (hard-core/casual gamer) Where do they play? At home, on the move What do they use? Mobile phone, tablets, console, What motivates them, when playing? Do they like stories? Do they make their own story? Do they play alone? Knowing your gamers technology will help you decide: On the game levels of difficulties On the game graphics/animations’ quality (mobile games may not require as much as PlayStation ones) On the game engine you are going to use On interactions(multiplayers) But also you will ensure that the gap follow the rules (PG rating, ethnic/gender representation).

Game Blue Print The story/narrative The treatment The game flow Diagram The Sketches Story boards The models specs or Technical Guidelines How to build them (low poly, rendering) Exact dimensions assets Story Boards Art styles Sound specs Big document Created by a team of: Artists Researchers Writers 3d Specialists Sound specialists

Storyboard

Character design All Characters in games and 3d films started as a rough sketch during early development stages. With trial and errors designers managed to refine characters

Sketch Very Important Find software or apps for Ipad that can help you Take drawing tutorials

Add Depth Take your sketches onto Photoshop and add colour using your preferred techniques of colouring

I Can’t Draw Start with a picture Edit in Photoshop, turn it into a work of art Your learning curve would be digital art

Remember Avoid stereotypes with your characters, only GTA can get away with this so far.

Resident Evil “Shiva”

The Game Flow Chart

Thinks of how to present your work to professionals and potential idea buyers Like in advertising, visuals make the sell

Up to you Basic Narrative Explain the levels and main characters In small groups come with a game idea. Present your idea with: Basic Narrative Explain the levels and main characters Characters sketch ups Environment/building sketches Props and assets sketches
