KWAKIUTL CULTURE AREA The Kwakiutl lived in the Pacific Northwest, a cool rainforest with towering trees and a long coastline. This allowed for fishing, hunting, and gathering food and resources from the forest.

KWAKIUTL TRANSPORTATION The Kwakiutl used the cedar trees to make very decorative canoes.

KWAKIUTL TRANSPORTATION The art of the Kwakiutl was in put into everything they did.

KWAKIUTL SHELTER The Kwakiutl lived in large plank houses made of cedar wood. Similar to the Iroquois, they could hold several families.

KWAKIUTL CLOTHING Clothing for the Kwakiutl was made of fur, skins, or straw made from tree bark. Ceremonial dress could be very decorative as well.

KWAKIUTL FOOD The sea was the main source of food for the Kwakiutl, providing many fish and shellfish. Nuts and berries harvested from the forest was eaten as well. Community wide “potlaches” celebrated sharing their many resources.

KWAKIUTL TODAY After being banned by the Canadian government in the late 1800s, the potlach was legalized in the 1950s, and is celebrated again.

KWAKIUTL TODAY The Kwakiutl nations fought for the return of their cultural artifacts stolen when the potlaches were made illegal. Almost all have been returned to them, which they now display at their own cultural museum.
